신라 진성여왕대의 재이와 농민반란 (The natural disasters and extraordinary event and the Peasants’Revolt during the ruling years of Queen Jinseong of the Silla Kingdom)

초록

신라 진성여왕대의 농민반란은 신라사회를 돌이킬 수 없는 분열로 이끌었고, 그 결과 후삼국 시대를 거쳐 고려의 건국으로 이어졌다. 신라 하대에 있어 농민반란과 같은 민의 이탈은 재이와 관련된 대응과 관련된 경우가 적지 않았다. 여기에서는 진성여왕대의 농민반란이 일어난 배경을 보다 시야를 넓혀 경문왕가기의 재이에 대한 대응양상과 관련지어 살펴보았다.
신라 하대 경문왕가가 성립되면서 재이에 대한 국가적 대응은 상당히 미흡하였다. 경문왕대의 경우 재해에 대한 대응보다는 왕권의 위상을 높이기 위한 노력에 주력하였다. 이러한 상황은 헌강왕과 정강왕대에도 이어졌다. 헌강왕대에는 도적발생으로 인한 사회적 문제가 다시 부각되었지만, 이의 해결에는 별다른 관심을 가지지 않았다. 지방민의 수탈에 기초한 왕경의 풍요로움에 만족하였던 것이다. 이는 정강왕대 역시 마찬가지였다. 가뭄이 발생하였지만, 백고좌법회의 개최에만 그치고 있는 것이다.
경문왕가의 재이에 대한 대응 양상은 진성여왕대도 이어졌다. 농민반란이 일어난 이듬해에 국왕은 황룡사에 가서 연등회를 개최한 것이다. 이는 그 이전의 경문왕가의 재이에 대한 대응과 다름이 없었다고 할 수 있다. 이처럼 경문왕가는 재이로 야기된 사회문제를 극복할 능력이 없었는데, 이것이 결국 새로운 왕계의 등장으로까지 이어졌다고 할 수 있다.
이러한 점에서 진성여왕대의 농민반란은 신라 하대의 누적된 정치ㆍ사회ㆍ경제적 모순에 기인한 것이지만, 그 近因은 경문왕가의 재이에 대한 대응에서 구체적으로 찾을 수 있다고 하겠다.

영어초록

The peasants’ revolt during the ruling years of Queen Jinseong of the Silla Kingdom led Silla society to a irrevocable division, which resulted in the establishment of the Goryeo Kingdom through Later Three States. There are not a few cases where breakaway of the public will like peasants’ revolt in the late period of the Silla Kingdom was associated with the response to the natural disasters and extraordinary event. This study looked into the background for the outbreak of peasants’ revolt during the ruling period of Queen Jinseong by connecting it with the response aspects to natural disasters and extraordinary event during the period of the Gyeongmun royal household in wider horizons.
With the establishment of the Gyeongmun royal household during the later days of the Silla Kingdom, the state response to natural disasters and extraordinary event was considerably insufficient.
In case of the ruling period of King Gyeongmun, they concentrated on enhancing the status of royal authority rather than the response to natural disasters and extraordinary event. Such circumstances carried over even to the ruling period of King Heongang and King Jeonggang. During the ruling period of King Heongang, social problems due to the occurrence of rampant thieves emerged again, but the State didn’t have a concern in particular for its solution. The ruling group was satisfied with the richness of Royal district based on exploitation of local people. Such an aspect was also true of the ruling period of King Jeonggang. Even when a drought struck the state, they just settled for holding Baekgojuwabeophe, lit., Buddhist Services led by high priests for safeguarding the state.
The response aspects to natural disasters and extraordinary event of the Gyeongmun royal household carried over even to the ruling period of Queen Jinseong. The next year after the peasants’ revolt broke out, King held the lotus lantern festival at Hwangryongsa Temple. It can be said that such an aspect was nothing short of the previous Gyeongmun royal household’s response to natural disasters and extraordinary event. Like this, the Gyeongmun royal household didn’t have the ability to tide over social problems caused by natural disasters and extraordinary event, which can be said to carry over even to the appearance of a new royal pedigree after all.
In this respect, the peasants’ revolts during the ruling years of Queen Jinseong was attributable to the accumulated political, social, economic contradictions during the late days of the Silla Kingdom, but the proximate cause thereof could be found concretely from the response of Gyeongmun royal household to natural disasters and extraordinary event.
