百濟 武王代 對新羅戰의 추진과 그 전략 －‘한강 유역 공격’에 대한 비판적 검토를 중심으로－ (Baekje’s Strategy of War against Silla in King Mu Period －Critical Approach about ‘Battles around Han River Basin’－)

초록

본고는 백제 무왕대 對新羅戰의 전략 구상과 그 수행과정을 살펴보기 위한 글이다.
무왕대 백제･신라의 전투 지점을 살펴보면, 대부분의 전투가 소백산맥 일대부터 성주･ 합천 以西지역에서 벌어졌음을 확인할 수 있다. 따라서 종래의 지적처럼 가야고지 방면으로 진출하기 위해 대신라전을 추진했던 경향이 뚜렷하게 파악된다. 반면 무왕대대신라전의 또 다른 軸으로 이해해왔던 ‘한강 유역 공격’ 혹은 ‘北方故土수복’ 관련 사건은 비교적 소략한 편이다. ‘가야고지 방면 진출’에 비해 전투의 발생 빈도나 시간적간격이 현저히 떨어지며, 그마저도 椵岑城전투･勒努縣습격･熊津주둔 등 일부 사건에 국한된다. 가잠성의 경우, 대체로 그 위치를 안성 죽산으로 이해해왔으나, 최근 전북 무주나 충북 영동 양산으로 비정한 견해가 주목된다. 특히 684년 報德城民의 반란및 진압 과정을 고려하면, 가잠성은 북쪽의 한강 유역 방면보다는 익산 동쪽 방면의 교통로상에 위치했을 것으로 여겨진다. 627년 웅진 주둔의 경우, 실제 공격이 단행되지않았다는 점에서 한강 유역 공격의 주요 단서로서 큰 의미를 부여하기 어렵다. 오히려같은 달에 신라 서변 침공을 동시에 추진했던 사실로 볼 때, 당시 웅진 주둔은 북방 지역에서 군사적 긴장감을 조성하고 신라의 관심을 돌리기 위한 군사적 양동작전으로 이해된다. 결국 무왕대 한강 유역 방면 공격은 늑노현 습격 1회에 불과한데, 이를 근거로무왕대 대신라전의 전략으로서 ‘한강 유역 공격’이나 ‘북방고토 수복’을 상정할 수는 없다고 판단된다. 따라서 당시 백제는 북방･동북방 방면에서 군사적 긴장감만 조성하고실질적으로는 신라 왕경으로 향하는 주요 교통로를 집중 공략해나가는 전략을 구상했던 것으로 추정된다. 이는 新州의 위아래로 고구려･백제를 방어해야 하는 신라의 상황및 한강 유역 장악 이후 예상되는 환경을 고려한 실리적인 정책이라 하겠다. 이에 기반한 무왕대 대신라전 수행은 확대된 전선을 모두 방어해야 하는 신라에게 군사적 부담을 가중시켰고, 그 결과 백제가 신라를 일방적으로 공격하면서 전쟁의 우위를 점할수 있게 되었다.

영어초록

This paper is about the war strategy and process against Silla by king Mu(武王) of Baekje. In king Mu period, according to the records, most of the battles between Baekje and Silla took place between the Sobaek mountain chain and west of SungJu·Hapcheon.
It can prove that king Mu tried to take away the territory around Gayagoji(加耶故地, ex-Gaya’s territory), like the previous studies.
However, there is relatively little evidence of ‘battles around Han River basin’ or ‘Bukbanggoto(北方故土, lost territory of Baekje in northern area) recapture’, that was regarded as one of the main war strategy of Baekje in King Mu period. Compared with battles for occupying Gayagoji, the frequency of battles for capturing Bukbanggoto is significantly low. In addition, there were only three battles were mentioned as evidence of the ‘battles around Han River basin’: Gajamsung(椵岑城) battles, Neuknohyun(勒努縣) raid, and Woongjin (熊津) military station. Therefore the purpose of this paper is considering each of those battles that mentioned as evidence of the ‘battles around Han River basin’ in detail and further identify whether those were actually related to the ‘battles around Han River basin’.
The goal of the battles in Gajamsung has been known to restore the Han River basin and block traffic from Silla to China because many papers regarded that Gajamsung was located around Juksan in Ansung. However, according to recent papers that Gajamsung was located in Muju or Yeongdong, the goal of the Gajamsung Battle can be interpreted differently. To be specific, considering to the rebellion and suppression process of People in Bodeocksung(報德 城) recorded in the biographies of Kim Yung Yun(金令胤) in Samguksagi, it can be assumed that Gajamsung was located on traffic route east side of Iksan rather than on the Han River basin.
As for the military station in Woongjin in 627, it is not possible to be cited as the main evidence of the battles around the Han River basin as there were no actual attacks. Moreover, given the records that Baekje carried out another invasion of Silla’s west side at the same time of Woongjin militaty stration, military station in Woongjin can be understood as a feint operation to divert Silla’s attention and a deceptive strategy to create tensions in northern region. Therefore in king Mu period, ‘Neuknohyun raid’ is the only battle taken place near the Han River. But, it is not enough to be assumed that ‘battles around Han River basin’ or ‘Bukbanggoto recapture’ is the strategy of war against Silla in kin Mu period.
In conclusion, Baekje seems used the strategy focused on major transportation route to Silla with only creating military tension in the north or northeast area. This Baekje’s war strategy took into account Silla’s situation which must check Goguryeo in the north of Sinju(新州) and Baekje in the south of Sinju(新州) and Baekje’s situation that could arise after Baekje occupy the Han River basin.
This strategy has made the battle point increased between Baekje and Silla, adding to the burden of Silla in terms of building defense systems and moving troops. As a result, Baekje got the upper hand in the war against Silla by unilaterally attacking toward Silla since the middle of the 7th century.
