백제시대 점복과 정치 (Divination and Politics in Packche dynasty)

초록

본 고는 백제 정치권력이 점복을 중요시하고 이를 통치 기재로 사용하였다는 시각 하에서 백제 점복의 변천상과 그 정치적 의미를 고찰한 것이다.
백제 초기에는 부여와 고구려에서 행해지던 전통적인 점법과 더불어 한반도 서남지역에서 행해지던 복골점법을 사용하였는데, 巫와 日者가 이를 담당하였다. 4~5세기 중국식 점법을 본격적으로 수용하면서 점복문화가 더욱 풍부해졌다. 『역경』의 도입과 함께 중국식 점법인 卜筮를 수용하였으며, 5세기 중엽 비류왕대 『역림』과 『식점』의 도입으로 다양한 중국식 점법이 사용되었다. 특히 式盤을 사용하는 식점은 고구려 천문점의 전통을 이어 받은 백제로서 익숙한 점법이었다. 6세기 후반에 백제의 역학은 일본에 易學博士를 순번제로 파견할 만큼 상당한 수준에 이르렀다. 『周書』의 표현처럼, 6세기 후반에 이르러 백제는 중국식 복서와 관상, 역학 등에도 조예가 깊었던 것이다.
정치권력자의 의지와 반하는 점괘 해석은 점복을 담당하는 관리에게는 생명을 걸어야 하는 사항이었다는 것을 백제사에서도 확인해 볼 수 있다. 이는 점복이 가지는 정치적 의미가 군주의 정치적 행위에 대한 명분을 제시하고 국론을 통일하는 역할을 하였기 때문일 것이다. 중국식 점복법은 오랜 기간의 교육을 요하는 최신 기법으로서, 왕만이 이를 구사할 수 있는 전문 인력을 보유할 수 있었다. 당 현종대에 편찬된 『개원점경』과 『삼국사기』의 백제기사를 일부 비교함으로써 백제사에서 점복이 가지는 정치적 의미를 추출해 보았다. 백제왕은 점복을 통해 자신의 권위와 정치적 행위의 정당성을 하늘의 뜻으로서 추인 받고자 하였다. 인간이 발명한 온갖 복잡다단한 지적 논리를 뒤엎을 수 있었던 것은 占이라는 비논리였던 것이다.

영어초록

This piece of research aims to examine the divination of the Packche(百濟) dynasty, pay particular attention to its changes and how it was served to the domination of the power.
People of ruling classes in early Packche, who came from Gokuryo(高句麗) were descendants of Puyo(夫餘). Therefore it might be used the methods of Puyo and Gokuryo for their divination. Puyo used cracks of burnt ox’s hoof for prediction of fortune before battles. There were various diviners in Gokuryo dynasty, such as shamans(巫) and astrologers(日者) who prophesied from astronomical phenomena and the other natural signs. I thought these method had been applied in early period of Packche, including divine bones(卜骨) which were excavated in Packche’s territories.
It seems like Packche tried to adopt the Chinese divination bǔshì(卜筮) from the 4th century by teaching the Book of Changes(周易). It is very important that King Biryu(比流王:r. 427-455) asked the Forest of Changes(易林), and the Formal Divination(式占) to Wenti(文帝) of Song dynasty(420∼478). In the Formal Divination, it was used the formal plate(式盤) engraved astronomical chart(天文圖). It was very familiar to Packche, because she had her own astrology and astrologer, inherited from Koguryo. The astronomical chart of the tomb of King Muryeong(武寧王:462-523), which had several resemblances with the formal plates of chinese Han(漢) dynasty, reveals one of the aspects in its changes. From the late 6th century, Packche sent her bureaucrats triennially to Japan, who was the professors of the Book of Changes(易學博士) as well. I think that Packche’s king tried to adopt new technology of divination, because they had used it to justify their policies and every acts including wars. Most of the political cases from the results of ancient chinese divinations until the early 7th century, were arranged on Divine Canon of Kāiyuán(開元占經) by T’ang Xuánzōng(玄宗:685-762) If the interpretations of shaman and astrologer on the untypical natural signs, such as unexpected comet, had not been matched to king’s intention, sometimes king killed them. According to Samguksaki(三國史記), the Great King Cha(次大王:71-165) of Koguryo and King Uija(義子王:?-660) of Packche did. This means that divination was served to power’s own purpose, as pretending god’s will. By only the illogical divination, complicated problems could be settled in the middle of the various logical arguments on political conflicts. In my thought, that’s the main reasons which kings of Packche tried to adopt new methods of divinations. By supporting from the interpretations of bureaucratic prophets as the results of new technologies, the decisions and political acts of the Pachche’s kings could have more dignities and authorities.
