월산 대종사와 법보신문』 (Ven. Wolsan and Beopbosinmun』)

초록

성림당 월산 대종사는 한국불교의 전환기에 산문에 들어 한국불교의 중흥을 이끈 대표적인 고승이다. 월산 스님은 선원과 강원을 개원해 많은 제자를 양성했고, 일제강점기를 거치며 혼탁해진 사찰을 일신하려 애썼다. 또 총무원장·종회의장·원로회의 의장 등 조계종의 주요 직책을 역임하며 종단의 기틀을 세우고자 했고 한국불교의 위상을 높이는 데에 크게 기여했다. 이와 더불어 월산 스님의 뚜렷한 업적이 바로 『법보신문』 창간으로 이는 월산 스님의 일생에서 결코 간과될 수 없는 중요한 부분이다.
초대 발행인이었던 월산 스님은 1988년 5월 16일 『법보신문』을 창간하면서 ‘존경진리(尊敬眞理), 굴복아만(屈伏我慢), 공명정대(公明正大)’라는 사훈으로 『법보신문』의 방향을 명확히 제시했다. 부처님의 가르침을 받들어 선양하고, 불교계 안팎으로 팽배해있는 아집과 교만심을 항복받으며, 옳고 밝은 것을 드러내고 널리 펴라는 의미였다. 또 월산 스님은 창간사에서 ‘나’를 청정하게 하지 않으면 안 된다.’ ‘나라가 바로 서야 한다.’ ‘통합을 이뤄야 한다.’ ‘대자대비의 불을 밝혀야 한다.’의 4가지 큰 방향을 제시했다.
이는 불교언론이 현대불교사를 기록하는 사관의 역할, 부처님 가르침을 널리 알리고 바람직한 수행·신행문화를 견인하는 전법사 역할, 불교계 안팎에서 벌어지는 비불교적 행위와 훼불에 적극 대응하는 호법신장 역할, 비판을 넘어 구체적인 방향을 제시하는 한국불교 책임자 역할까지 다하라는 준엄한 뜻으로도 이해할 수 있다.
『법보신문』은 창간 이후 불교계의 폐단에 대한 과감한 비판으로 불교개혁을 주도했으며, 곳곳에 부처님의 법음을 전하고자 했다. 기복신앙을 끌어안되 기복에 머무르지 않고, 지성불교·수행불교·주체적 불교로 나아가도록 이끌었다. 또 비불교적인 행위와 훼불에 맞섰으며, 비판을 넘어 대안을 모색하고 제시하려 했다. 그 과정에서 공감과 격려, 비난과 질책이 잇따랐으며, 끊이질 않는 민·형사 소송과 수차례의 폐간 위기를 겪기도 했다.
월산 스님은 발행인 창간사에서 “잠들지 않고 쉬지 않고 게으르지 않으며 굽힘이 없고 쓰러짐이 없고 부서짐이 없는 목탁을 만들었다. … 『법보신문』은 목탁이 되어 영원할 것이다.”라고 명시했다. 이는 『법보신문』이 불교적인 정체성과 불교언론의 사명을 잃지 않을 때 가능하며, 사훈인 ‘존경진리, 굴복아만, 공명정대’의 구체적인 실천이기도 하다. 『법보신문』은 단순히 신문을 만들고 기사를 쓰는 자체에 목적을 두고 있지 않다. 불자들이 행복하고 불교계가 건강하고 보다 살기 좋은 세상을 만들어가는 데 기여하는 뜻깊은 불교언론이 되는 것이 목적이다. 그것이 초대 발행인 월산 스님과 그동안 『법보신문』 창간을 이끌고 유지해왔던 이들의 숭고한 뜻과 기대에 부응하는 일이기도 하다.

Ven. Wolsan is a representative of a respectable monk who entered Seon School during the transition period of Korean Buddhism and developed Korean Buddhism. Wolsan opened the Seon Center and Buddhist Priesthood University to train many disciples and tried to renovate the temple, which had become turbid during the Japanese colonial period. He also served in major positions of Jogye Order such as President of the Jogye Order·speaker of the central council· speaker of the elders council. In addition, Wolsan's distinct achievement is the publication of 『beopbosinmun』, which is an important part of Wolsan's life that cannot be overlooked.
Wolsan, the first publisher, launched 『beopbosinmun』 on May 16, 1988 and clearly presented the direction of 『beopbosinmun』 with the motto of ‘respect for truth, overcoming self-righteousness, being fair and just’. It meant accepting the teachings of the Buddha, surrendering the self-righteousness that prevails inside and outside the Buddhist world, and revealing and spreading the right things. In addition, Monk Wolsan has to purify himself in his founding speech, the four major directions: ‘The nation must stand upright’ ‘Unity must be achieved’ and ‘The light of Maha-maitri-karuna must be lit.’ presented This goes beyond criticism, the role of the Buddhist media as a magistrate recording modern Buddhism, the role of a magistrate who spreads the teachings of the Buddha and leads a desirable practice and culture of practice, and the role of Buddhist Guardians in responding to hostile acts against Buddhism within and outside the Buddhist community. It can also be understood as the strict meaning of fulfilling the role of the person in charge of Korean Buddhism that suggests specific directions.
『beopbosinmun』 has led the Buddhist reforms with bold criticism of the evils of the Buddhist world since its inception, and tried to spread the Buddha's teachings everywhere. Embracing the belief in ups and downs, but not staying in the ups and downs, led them to advance toward intellectual Buddhism, ascetic Buddhism, and Juche Buddhism. He also faced hostile acts against Buddhism and tried to seek and suggest alternatives beyond criticism. In the process, sympathy, encouragement, criticism, and reprimand followed, and there were endless civil and criminal lawsuits and several crises of bankruptcy.
In the publisher's founding address, Wolsan said, “I made a moktak that never sleeps, does not rest, is not lazy, does not bend, does not fall, and does not break. … 『beopbosinmun』 will become a moktak and will last forever.” This is possible when 『beopbosinmun』 does not lose its Buddhist identity and the mission of the Buddhist media, and it is also a concrete practice of its motto, ‘respect for truth, overcoming self-righteousness, being fair and just’. 『beopbosinmun』 does not simply aim at making newspapers and writing articles. Its purpose is to become a significant Buddhist journal that contributes to making a world where Buddhists are happy and the Buddhist community is healthy and a better place to live. It is also to meet the noble will and expectations of Wolsan, the first publisher, and those who have led and maintained 『beopbosinmun.
