History and Present State of Teaching Korean Language in the Far East of Russia, From the Oriental Institute to the Higher College of Korean Studies

초록

The purpose of this paper is to describe history and present situation of teaching and studying the Korean language in the Far East of Russia. Globalization of the Korean language is obviously one of important issues in the Republic of Korea. I would like to show some of achievements and difficulties encountered in the process of teaching the Korean language in the Russian Far East to help Korean educators who are not familiar with this subject to achieve their goal of expanding the Korean language all over the world. Korean studies in Russia's Far East began as early as fall of 1900, when the Oriental Institute commenced the Department of the Korean Language, which happened to be the first and only one at that time in Russia. The Oriental Institute was an institution of a new type, aimed at fostering practical Orientalists with good command of written and spoken language. Such were ideas which generated the basics of the Korean language teaching methods. In July 1939 the Oriental Institute was closed down and the Korean language program in the Far East remained ceased for many years. In 1975, the Far Eastern State University resumed teaching of the Korean language and Koreaｰrelated subjects. In their teaching the Korean language the professors and lecturers of the Higher College of Korean studies follow best traditions of the Oriental Institute, focusing on training practical specialists. Further the paper briefly describes goals, means and content of the Korean language program focusing on contents and methods of teaching productive and reproductive written language. By detailed description of textbooks and manuals and contents of teaching course we attempted to illustrate how we achieved main goals of mastering Writing in Korean language. In conclusion we express hope that decreasing of a number of students who want to study the Korean in the last few years will stop and increase again.
