후백제 불교조각의 대외교섭 (Buddhist Sculpture of Later Baekje and Cultural Exchange with Neighboring States)

초록

892년 甄萱이 건국한 後百濟는 한때 후삼국 중 가장 강대한 군사력을 자랑하였으며,‘正開’라는 독자적인 연호를 사용하기도 하였다. 이러한 후백제였던 만큼 936년 고려에 의해 멸망하기 전까지 끊임없이 三韓一統을 위한 전쟁을 진행하는 한편, 신라·고려는 물론 中國의 吳越과 後唐 그리고 일본과도 적극적인 외교를 펼쳤다.
본고는 후백제의 역사와 문화를 이해하고 복원하는 과정의 일환으로써, 후백제 불교조각이 신라·고려, 그리고 중국 불교조각과 어떠한 영향을 주고받았는지를 밝히는데 목적이 있다.
이를 위해 우선, 후백제 佛事의 양상은 어떠하였으며, 어떠한 불상이 조성되었는지를 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 후백제 불교조각과 신라 불교조각과의 관계, 태봉과 고려 불교조각과의 영향 여부와 함께 중국 오대 불교조각과의 관계를 살펴보았다.
후삼국기가 매우 짧은 기간이었음에도 후백제 불교조각은 통일신라 불상양식을 바탕으로 일부 백제 형식을 차용한 특징을 보인다. 반면, 태봉의 불교조각은 후백제 불상과 마찬가지로 통일신라 불상을 기본으로 하였지만, 섬세함과 장식성이 두드러지며, 고려의 불교조각은 건장함과 당당함이 극대화 되었다. 이처럼 후삼국의 불교조각이 제각기 다른 양상을 보이는 이유는 후백제, 태봉, 고려가 추구하였던 정치적 지향점과 對新羅觀이 서로 달랐기 때문이다.
특히 후백제는 완주 봉림사지 삼존불이나 나주 철천리 석불입상에서 볼 수 있듯 통일신라 불상을 적극적으로 수용하였는데, 이는 후백제가 백제의 부흥을 표방하였음에도 견훤이 신라의 지방관을 자임하는 한편 신라의 문화를 동경하였기 때문으로 판단된다.
한편, 건국부터 적대적이었던 태봉이나 920년대 후반부터 적대관계였던 고려의 영향은 후백제에서 살펴볼 수 없다. 다만 태봉과 고려의 점령지인 후백제 서남해일대(나주일대)에 태봉과 고려가 직접 조성한 불상이 전하고 있을 뿐인데, 전자의 사례가 장흥 용화사 석불좌상이고 후자의 사례는 해남 대흥사 북미륵암 마애불좌상이다.
또한 후백제 불교조각 가운데 익산 왕궁리 오층석탑 출토 금동불입상, 군산 불주사 금동불입상 등에서는 후백제와 빈번한 교류를 하였던 중국 오월 불교조각의 영향도 살펴볼 수 있다. 이들 불상은 오월 불상에서 볼 수 있는 풍부한 양감의 얼굴과 평판적이고 홀쭉한 신체를 특징으로 하고 있다. 특히 이들 불상은 지역적으로는 후백제와 오월의 중요한 무역항이었던 군산지역 인근에 집중적으로 분포하고 있어, 정치뿐만 아니라 불교조각에 있어서도 후백제와 오월과의 교류가 빈번했던 것으로 판단된다.

영어초록

The Later Baekje Kingdom, founded by Gyeonhwon in 892, had for a brief period the most powerful army among the Three Later Kingdoms, and used its own reign title, Jeonggae (literally meaning “Authoritative Opening”). The kingdom was embroiled in almost permanent war with the other two Korean kingdoms, Silla and Later Goguryeo (later Taebong, and then Goryeo), over the unification of all three, until Goryeo brought about its final collapse in 936. It also maintained active diplomatic relations not only with Goryeo and Silla on the Korean Peninsula, but also with Wuyue and Later Tang in China, and with Japan.
This study focuses on the Buddhist sculptures of Later Baekje and its mutual exchanges with Silla, Goryeo, and the Chinese dynasties as part of an effort to enhance our understanding and rediscover the value of the history and culture of Later Baekje. The first part of the paper deals with various aspects of Buddhist ceremonies and rites held in Later Baekje and the Buddha statues produced by Baekje artisans for the purposes of worship. The study then takes up other topics such as the relations between Later Baekje, Silla and Goryeo (and Taebong before it) and their mutual influence on each other’s respective sculptures, as well as the Buddhist statues of the Five Dynasties in China.
The Later Three Kingdoms Period (892-936) is extremely short compared with other time periods in Korean history, yet the Buddhist sculpture of Later Baekje shows a unique combination of Baekje and Unified Silla styles. The Buddhist sculptural works of Taebong exhibit similar features, although they are more decorative and elaborate, while Goryeo statues tend to be more imposing figures. The stylistic differences in the Buddhist statues of the Later Three Kingdoms also reflect the differences in the three kingdoms’ political goals and relations with Silla.
The artisans of Later Baekje actively adopted characteristic elements of the Unified Silla statues, as evidenced by the Buddha Triad at the Bongnimsa Temple Site in Wanju and the Standing Stone Buddha in Cheolcheon-ri, Naju. These statues suggest that Gyeonhwon admired the cultural heritage of Silla, as shown by the fact that he regarded himself as a provincial administrator of Unified Silla, while proclaiming that he did so in order to restore Baekje.
Meanwhile, the Buddhist statues of Later Baekje show few signs of influence of the statues of Taebong or, after the later 1920s, those of Goryeo, with which it had been at war since its foundation. Interestingly, in the southwestern part of the Later Baekje Kingdom (i.e. the area around present-day Naju), which had previously been occupied by Taebong and Goryeo, there are various Buddhist sculptural works made by Taebong and Goryeo artisans, including the Seated Stone Buddha of Yonghwasa Temple in Jangheung (Taebong) and the Rock-cut Seated Buddha of Bungmireugam Hermitage, Daeheungsa Temple, Haenam (Goryeo).
Of the Later Baekje sculptures, the Gilt-bronze Standing Buddha discovered at the Five-story Stone Pagoda in Wanggung-ri, Iksan, and the Gilt-bronze Standing Buddha of Buljusa Temple in Gunsan exhibit the influence of sculptures from Wuyue in China, which maintained close diplomatic relations with Later Baekje. Statues with a voluminous face and lean body, characteristic elements of Wuyue statues, are found mostly around Gunsan, which was a major port linking Later Baekje and Wuyue, suggesting that the Buddhist artisans of Later Baekje were under the influence of Wuyue across the Yellow Sea.
