초록

이 논문은 백운 심대윤의 학자적 자의식과 경전해석의 일 국면을 검토한 것이다. 심대윤은 일반 사대부로서는 드물게 木槃을 만들어 파는 상업활동에 종사했고, 그 경험을 토대로 인간의 현실적 욕망을 직시하여 福利의 思想을 개창했다. 종래 天理와 人欲으로 대별되던 인간윤리의 해석 시야를 개인들이 이욕을 추구하면서도 그것을 公利의 측면에서 조화시킬 수 있다고 생각한 것이다. 이는 19세기 서학에 대한 경학의 주요한 대응으로 이해되었는데 이 논문은 이 논점에 대해 좀 더 진전된 시각을 확보하려는 시도이다.
우선 『백운집』 소재 詩文을 통해 심대윤의 삶의 궤적을 따라가며 자신의 사상을 형성하는 과정을 추적했으며, 그 시문에 내재된 자의식과 인간이해, 세계인식을 살펴보았다. 가정적 불운과 사회적으로 현달하지 못하는 삶의 형편에도 불구하고 심대윤은 철저하게 현실적 삶을 긍정하고 道를 자임하면서 儒者로서의 길을 묵묵하게 가고자 했다.
그리고 자신의 삶의 경험을 통해 터득한 人情과 事理에 기초하여 많은 경전들을 해석했다. 그 결과 때로 이전에 발명하지 못한 독특한 견해를 제시한 것이 적지 않지만 일 국면에는 당대의 주류적인 心性修養의 논리적 구조를 완전히 탈피하지는 못한 채 자신만의 독법을 가미하는 방식으로 전개되는 면도 없지 않다. 그러므로 그의 경전해석의 지평은 그 수준에 대한 평가는 잠시 유보하고, 우선 그 시대의 변화에 대응하는 논리와 국면을 주목하는 것이 요긴할 것으로 생각된다. 심대윤은 종래의 전통적인 관념에서의 지적 전통을 답습하지 않고 자신만의 해석 관점, 곧 人情과 事理라는 해석의 시각으로 접근하면서 이미 예견된 것이었다.

영어초록

This paper examined Baekwoon, Shim Daeyoon’s self-consciousness as a scholar and an aspect of his scripture interpretation. Unlike general noblemen of his time, he was involved in the commercial activity of producing and selling wooden trays, and based on the experience, he looked through human beings’ realistic desires and established the ideology of Bok-lee(福利, well-being). Compared to the perspective of human ethics that was represented by natural principle(天理) and human desire(人欲), he thought individuals can pursue their desires and still can harmonize them with public interests(公利). This was regarded as the main response of the study of Confucius against the Western Learning of the 19th century, and this paper is an effort to gain a more advanced perspective about this issue.
First of all, through the poetry in ‘Baekwoon Collection’, this study follows Shim’s track of life and the formative process of his ideology and observes his self-consciousness, understanding of human beings, and perception of the world. Despite family misfortunes and the reality of life that kept him from rising in eminence, Shim viewed the real life thoroughly positively, focused on duty(道), and tried to steadily follow his way as a Confucian scholar.
Also, based on humane benevolence and the principles of objects that he gained through his life experiences, he interpreted numerous scriptures. As a result, he sometimes presented unprecedented and unique ideas but there was limitation that he could not be free from the logical structure of the then main stream cultivation of mind and made discussions simply adding his own way of interpretations. Therefore, regarding his interpretation of scriptures, it will be more meaningful to defer the evaluation of his interpretation and focus on his logic and aspect that correspond to the change of the time. This was predictable as Shim did not follow the flow of the academic convention in the traditional ideology and made a new approach of humane benevolence and principles of objects in scripture interpretation.
