초록

매소성 전투는 나당전쟁 연구에서 많은 주목을 받아왔다. 그런데 매소성 전투 이전의 상황을 살펴보면, 중국 기록은 모두 675년 2월에 유인궤의 당군이 임진강을 넘어 신라군을 대파하고 칠중성을 장악하였으며, 말갈군이 바다를 통해 배를 타고 남하하였음을 언급하고 있다. 즉, 당ㆍ말갈군은 별개로 작전을 한 것이 아니라 수륙병진을 한 것이 확실하며, 『신당서』 신라전의 기록대로 당이 신라의 北境을 공격하였다고 보는 것이 합리적이다.
그러므로 당군이 만조 때 보급선으로 강을 거슬러 올라갈 수 있는 한계지점에서 동쪽 내륙으로 들어가는 작전을 구사하는 것은 매우 위험하다. 보급의 단절을 의미할 수 있기 때문이다. 그렇다면 말갈 함대의 최종 상륙지점은 칠중성에서 최대한 인접해야 한다. 결국 말갈 함대의 상륙지점은 바다에서 배가 들어올 수 있는 임진강 하구부터 고랑포 사이에서 찾아야 되는데 牛浦, 즉 금파리 城址가 주목된다. 이곳은 당군의 병력과 물자를 하역하고 보관하는 장소 및 상륙한 말갈군이 칠중성으로 진격하는 배후기지로 기능하였을 가능성이 높다.
매소성은 그 위치가 연천 또는 양주로 비정되는데, 매소성이 연천이라면 철수한 당ㆍ말갈군이 왜 남하하여 칠중성으로 진격하였는지 이해하기 힘들다. 반면 매소성의 위치가 양주라면 당ㆍ말갈군의 철수과정에서 벌어진 여러 전투 현상을 이해하기 쉽다. 퇴각로를 다각도로 상정할 수 있기 때문이다. 일부는 ‘동두천-연천-철원-회양’ 방면으로, 다른 일부는 ‘양주시 은현면 봉암리 방면에서 파주시 적성면 적암리를 거쳐 임진강을 도하하여 북상한 것으로, 또 다른 일부는 설마리 고개를 넘어 철수하였던 것으로 추정된다. 이러한 당의 퇴각로 중 가장 주된 길은 ‘양주-설마리 고개-칠중성-임진강’ 구간이었다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

The battle of ‘Maeso’ Fortress has been paid attention in the study about during the Period of the War between Silla and T’ang dynasty in middle of 7th century. According to the Chinese records about the situation before the battle, it was mentioned that T'ang forces under the command of general Liu Rengui(劉仁軌) crossed the Limjin river, defeated the troops of Silla, and occupied the ‘Chiljung' Fortress. Also it was recorded that the troops of Malgal which was one of the tribe of the North-Western region of T’ang, advanced southward by ships. In other words, T’ang and Malgal were not separated troops that operated independently in the context of strategy, but a allied forces that advanced along both sides sea and land. As in the 『New Book of T'ang(新唐書)』, it is reasonable to assume that T’ang attacked the northern boundary of Silla.
Therefore, it was so risky to carry out a operation under the condition of the limitation that Tang’s supply ship could advanced too far to east. It meaned that they had to take risk of run out of supplies. So then, the final landing place had to be as possible as close in with the ‘Chiljung’ Fortress. As the result, the landing place of Malgal had to be the place that a ship could enter, and It should be somewhere between the mouth of Limjin river and Gorangpo. The author pays attention to U-po, also called the castle site of Geumpa-ri. It is reasonable to assume the place was the place to load and keep combat strength and supplies, and the rear base for advancing to the Chiljung-seong Fortress.
It is estimated that ‘Maeso’ Fortress was located in Yeoncheon or Yangju. If this fortress was located in Yeoncheon, it could be difficult to understand why the allied forces pulled out from the ‘Maeso’ Fortress and then marched to the ‘Chiljung’ Fortress in south. In other words, if the fortress was located in Yangju, it could be easy to understand the situations of battles that had happened while the allied forces was pulling out. Because it is possible to suppose the routes of retreat from various angles. This is the reason why the allied forces that advanced from north to south occupied the ‘Chiljung’ Fortress at first. A role of the ‘Chiljung’ Fortress is that it is easy to defend the uphill path of Seolma-ri that connected to a main road headed for Yangju and Han river.
