초록

백석은 시를 발표하기 이전에 소설과 수필을 먼저 발표하였으며, 시집을 내고 본격적으로 시에 집중하던 기간에도 중간에 수필을 지속적으로 발표하였다. 그는 소설과 수필과 시를 함께 쓴 만능 작가였고, 그 가운데서도 특히 수필과 시 두 개의 장르는 창작 기간 내내 지속적으로 병행해 나간 문인이었다.
수필은 형식의 제약 없이 자유롭게 개인의 일상을 써나가는 글이라, 다른 시인들도 그런 장르의 글을 쓰곤 하지만, 백석의 수필은 다른 작가들과 달리 독자적인 형식과 미학을 지니고 있고, 또 시와 연동되어 있다. 그는 수필을 먼저 쓰고, 이어서 사상(事象)을 가다듬어 시로 형상화시키는 방식을 자주 취했는데, 이러한 창작방식은 특히 함흥 시절에 발표한 작품들에서 두드러지며, 그 가운데서 특히 깊은 연관성을 지닌 작품은 수필 「가재미, 나귀」, 「무지개 뻗치듯 만세교」와 시 「선우사」, 「나와 나타샤와 흰 당나귀」 이다. 이 글은 이 점에 주목하여 이 두 편의 수필과 시들을 상호 연관성의 측면에서 분석하여 그의 수필세계를 처음으로 조명하고, 그의 시를 더욱 정교하게 규명하고자 한 것이다.
백석의 수필 「가재미, 나귀」는 함흥으로 이주한 후 얼마 지나지 않아 발표한 것으로 자신의 새로운 거처와 함흥서 생긴 기호품 두 개를 전하고 있는 작품인데, 이 소품엔 그가 이 세상에서 가장 소중하게 생각하는 삶의 가치가 담겨 있다. 수필 「무지개 뻗치듯 만세교」는 그가 함흥에 와서 두 번째 발표한 것으로 함흥의 명소들을 낱낱이 소개한 기행문인데, 그 안에는 그의 꿈과 낭만과 이상이 고스란히 담겨 있다.
백석의 시 「선우사」는 앞서 발표한 수필 「가자미, 나귀」와 「무지개 뻗치듯 만세교」의 특정 정황을 재현하면서, 수필에서 사용하였던 사상(事象)과 언어들을 가져오되, 일부 말을 빼고, 일부 말은 덧붙이면서 시로 빚어낸 것이다. 수필에서 ‘흰 밥’, ‘가재미’, ‘친구’, ‘가난하다’, ‘쓸쓸하다’, ‘착하다’, ‘해정하다’는 사상(事象)과 말들은 그대로 가져오고, ‘고치장(고추장)’은 뺐으며, ‘욕심 없다’는 말은 추가하고, 또 수필에서 구사한 문학적 대상과 공간을 구체적인 묘사로 바꾸었으며, 멋진 제목을 붙였고, 궁극적으로 색채 이미지로 채색하여 한 편의 아름다운 시로 형상화한 것이다.
시 「나와 나타샤와 흰 당나귀」는 앞서 발표한 수필 「가재미, 나귀」에서 회담 골목에서의 나귀 타기에 ‘나타샤’와의 동반을 추가한 것이고, 그 ‘나타샤’는 수필 「무지개 뻗치듯 만세교」에서 백석이 만난 ‘구룡리 해수욕장’에서의 러시아 여인의 이미지에 소리 결을 고려한 이름을 부여한 것이다. 또 ‘흰 당나귀’는 수필 「가재미, 나귀」에서 구사한 것을 아름다운 이미지로 승화시킨 것이고, ‘산골’, ‘소주’는 수필 「무지개 뻗치듯 만세교」에서 사용한 것을 시의 공간과 소도구로 수용한 것이다. 그리고 백석은 여기에 수필 「가재미, 나귀」에서 사용하였던 흰 색의 시어들을 계승하며 ‘나타샤’와 어울리는 ‘눈’의 이미지를 덧붙여 아름다운 시로 완성한 것이다.

Baekseok first published novels and essays before releasing the poem, and continued to write essays in the middle of his book, even during his time of serious concentration. He was an all-around writer who wrote novels, essays, and poetry, among others, was a writer who continued to accompany essays and poems throughout his creative period.
While essays are free to write personal daily lives without form restrictions, other poets often write such genres of writings, Baekseok's essays have their own style and aesthetics, and are intertwined with poetry, unlike other writers. He wrote essays first, followed by adjusting and shaping thought into poetry, which stands out especially in works published during the Hahmheung's time.
Baekseok's development of this style of literary creation in Hahmheung was the first to stimulate essay writing, a direct record of experience in Hamheung, which is so different from his hometown of Chongju and Seoul, and to shape it into a poem after the matured period of experience and imagination. Some of the most representative works of this process were essays, “Sand dab, donkey”, “A rainbow-spread bridge” “Song of Good Friends” and “me, Natasha, and the white donkey.” In this article, he first lightened his essay world by looking at the two poems in terms of interconnection, and also took a closer look at his poetry.
Baekseok's essay, “Sand dab, donkey” was published shortly after in Hamheung’s latest release, conveying his new dwelling and two Hamheung-style symbols, which contain the value of life he values most in the world. The essay, “A rainbow-spread bridge” was his second announcement at Hahmheung, which featured all the famous sites of Hamheung, and contained the dreams, romance and ideals of Baekseok.
The poem “Song of Good Friends” in Baekseok brings back the ideas and languages used in the essay, but some words were added to the poem, reproducing the specific circumstances of the essay “Sand dab, Donkey” and “A rainbow-spread bridge” In the essay, “White Bob,” “Friend,” “I'm lonely,” “I'm lonely,” “I'm friendly,” “I'm sorry,” “I'm not greedy,” added “I've changed the subject of literature and space I've written from essay to specific description, and eventually I've colored it into a beautiful image. The poem “Me, Natasha and the White Donkey” is an addition of a companion to riding a donkey in the corner of the meeting in an essay, “Sand dab, Donkey,” which will give the Russian woman the name of “Guryong-ri Beach,” which she met in “Leggy Mansegyo.” In this poem, “I,” “White Donkey,” and “Natasha” sublimated what they had learned from their essays, “Sand dab, Donkey,” and “Soju,” from their essays, using the space and small parts of the city influenced by “A rainbow-spread bridge” And the white stone completed the poem with a beautiful poem, adding the image of the ‘eye’ to the colored tools used in the essay writing.
