음모론의 안과 밖, 장기 미제 사건을 이야기하다 - SBS <당신이 혹하는 사이>를 중심으로 (The Inside and Outside of Conspiracy Theories, Storytelling of Long-term Unsolved Cases - Focusing on SBS’s “While You Are Tempted”)

초록

이 연구에서는 범죄 인포테인먼트의 스토리텔링 전략에 주목하여, 레거시 미디어가 탐사보도 프로그램과 예능 프로그램을 교접해 시도하는 범죄 사건 스토리텔링의 저널리즘적 가능성과 한계를 가늠하고자 했다.
주된 분석 대상은 이야기의 주제를 ‘음모론’으로 집약해 전면에 내세운SBS <당신이 혹하는 사이> 중 ‘개구리 소년 사건’을 다루었던 두 편의 에피소드다. 장기 미제 사건과 음모론을 관계 짓는 방식에 있어 두 에피소드가 드러내는 차이는, 레거시 미디어가 ‘음모론’을 논의의 대상으로 삼는 방법과 의도의 변화와도 결부되어 있었다. 개구리 소년 사건을 처음 다루었던 에피소드에서는 장기 미제 사건을 둘러싼 음모론이 발생하게 된 경로를 추적하고, 음모론 형성 및 유포와 관련된 정치적, 법적, 금전적 이해 관계를 파헤쳤다. 반면 두 번째 에피소드에서는 사건의 범인과 범행 도구를 추론하는 여러 가설을 과학적으로 검증하고 가장 유력하지만 확실하지는 않은 또 하나의 가설을 제출하는 데 집중했다. 해당 에피소드에서는 기존 탐사보도 프로그램으로부터 이어진 과학적 검증 방법의 정밀성을 강조하고 그것을 과도하게 전시했으며, 결과적으로 그 결론은 검증하고자 했던 음모론들과 경쟁하는 관계에 놓이게 된다. 이러한 차이는 음모론을 프로그램의 주제로 삼아 문제시하려 했던 기존의 기획의도와 달리, 음모론을 괴담이나 미스터리처럼 추리의 소재로 조정한 데서 빚어진 것이었다.
음모론 자체를 문제적인 것으로 적시한다는 <당신이 혹하는 사이>의 첫 기획의도는 음모론에 대립하는 공론적인 것을 전제한다는 점에서 분명한 정치적 행위로 읽을 수 있다. 동시에 그러한 공론의 재현은 레거시 미디어의 권위를 지탱하는 상징자본이라는 점 또한 상기할 필요가 있다. 이 권위는 팬더믹 위기 상황이 한창 고조되었던 시기, 레거시 미디어가 각종 음모론이 공중의 안전을 위협하고 있다는 진단을 내리고 합리적 판단의 기준을 제시할 수 있게 하는 근간이기도 했다. 개편을 전후하여 확인되는 프로그램 기획의도 간의 낙차와 음모론을 활용하는 양상의 변화는 레거시 미디어의 권위를 지키려는 자성적 시도와 손쉬운 표변의 양면을 보여주는 것이기도 했다.

영어초록

This article focused on the storytelling of criminal events attempted through infotainment programs that combines investigation programs and entertainment programs in legacy media, and tried to examine its journalistic value and limitations.
The main targets of analysis are two episodes of SBS’s “While You Are Tempted,” which narrowed the theme of the story to ‘conspiracy theory’ and put it at the forefront, dealing with the ‘Frog Boy’ case. The difference between the two episodes in the way they relate long-term unsolved cases and conspiracy theories was also linked to changes in the method and intention of using ‘conspiracy theory’ as the subject of discussion. In previous episode that dealt with the Frog Boy case, it tracked the path of conspiracy theories surrounding long-term unsolved cases and explored political, legal, and financial interests related to the formation and dissemination of conspiracy theories. On the other hand, the second episode focused on scientifically verifying several hypotheses that infer the culprit and the tools of the crime, and submitting another hypothesis that is most likely but not certain.In the episode, the precision of scientific verification methods that followed from existing exploration and reporting programs was emphasized and displayed excessively, and as a result, the conclusions drawn compete with the conspiracy theories that were intended to be verified. This difference was caused by the adjustment of conspiracy theory to the subject material of reasoning like a ghost story or mystery, unlike the previous planning intention to take issue with conspiracy theory as the theme of the program.
The original sense of purpose of “While You Are Tempted” that states the conspiracy theory itself as a problematic can be read as a clear political decision in that it presupposes public opinion that opposes the conspiracy theory. At the same time, it is also necessary to consider that the reproduction of such public opinion is a symbolic capital that supports the authority of legacy media. The authority was also the basis for legacy media to diagnose that various conspiracy theories were threatening public safety during the height of the pandemic crisis, and to present reasonable criteria for judgement. The program’s sense of purpose and use of conspiracy theories, which changed significantly before and after the reorganization, showed the self-reflection to maintain the authority of legacy media and the ambivalance that it was easily reversed.
