忘憂堂 郭再祐에 관한 ‘불편한 진실’과 임진 의병 활동에 대한 재평가 (Mixed Truths About Gwak Jae-u and Reevaluation of His Activities as Leader of 'Righteous Army' During Japanese Invasion of 1592)

초록

Gwak Jae-u, a war hero during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592-1597, was one of the most frequently cited historical figures, thus being subject to many scholarly researches. So far, he has been known to have led a life as a recluse literati before the invasions and to have enjoyed respects from all political factions by taking politically neutral position after the war. This paper was aimed to track down in the micro-historical view point on the changes of his life through each historical phase.
Gwak, who used to serve as a military serviceman once before Hideyoshi’s invasions of Korea, had indignation at the forced draft of students in local official school (hyanggyo) by the government for military service and labor to build fortresses in a war preparatory measure initiated in 1591. He was one of many sajok (literati) of Gyeongsang-do province who resisted to the government actions taken in the name of governors and military commanders. For this reason, bureaucrats attempted to arrest him and systematically intervened in his activities to mobilize the "righteous army", when he rose to call to arms against the Japanese invasions, for their unfounded fear of his possible attempt of revolt.
However, he came to be reinstated thanks to the efforts of such bureaucrats as Kim Seong-il, who served as a commissioner of war affairs (Choyusa) and successfully accomplished his activities as a leader of the "righteous army." Thanks to his exploits during the war, he rapidly emerged as a nationally prominent figure in the political circle of the government. He also came to be recognized as a reliable, illustrious commander after the war. His political position was leaning toward Namin faction (southerners). Because of his political inclination, he was subject to severe criticisms and surveillance of Bugin faction (northerners). He was also forced to spend his latter days in Mangu-jeong pavilion in Yeongsan county, keeping distance with his hometown, Euiryeong.
His such image, as represented by his collected works, Mangu seonsaeng munjip (Collected Works of Mangu), was mainly formed during the war period 1592-1597, when he emerged as a national hero, and the post-war period during which he was praised as a sage. The unfounded speculations about his early days, based on such image of his, led into portraying him as a recluse literati. Given the historical circumstances, his well-known image might be nothing but a product of the popular imaginations of the early 17th century.
