당대(唐代) 경교(景敎) 일신(一神) 개념의 중국적 변용(變容) 연원(淵源) 고찰 (A Study On The Cause of Transformation of The Concept of Nestorian ‘One God’ During Tang Dynasty)

초록

당대(唐代) 황실의 공인(AD 635) 후 200여년 지속되었던 중국의 경교는 중국불교의 제 개념을 차용하여 기독교의 토착화를 시도하였다. 이러한 시도는 그들이 미륵 아미타 부처 개념과 일신(一神) 개념이 유사하게 본 것이 크게 작용했을 것이다. 그러나 이러한 부처 개념은 중앙아시아 조로아스터교의 신(神) 개념이 개입되어 나타난 현상으로 근본 불교의 입장과는 거리가 있다. 초기 중국 불교의 핵심이론인 신불멸론(神不滅論) 또한 중앙아시아 사람들의 영(靈)적 존재에 대한 믿음이 중국화 된 형태이다. 이러한 미륵 아미타의 신적(神的) 능력 또는 정신(精神)의 항구성 등은 현학적 단순 환원론 혹은 도가의 모순긍정적 표현을 통해 설명된다. 이 글은 중국 경교가 이러한 초기 중국불교의 제 개념을 차용함으로써 그것들이 지니는 이론적 문제점을 그대로 답습하게 되고, 자신들의 기독론 자체도 중국인들에게 전달될 수 없었음을 밝히고 있다.

영어초록

The Chinese Nestorian gained the official approval from Tang Dynasty at AD 635 and conducted positively their missionary works. However, their activities had been maintained only for 200 years and since then they disappeared in China. Chinese Nestorian tried to plant their christology to China by utilizing some important concepts of the Chinese Buddhism that already succeeded in adaptation in China. The reason that they made use of the Chinese Buddhist ideas is thought that they found the similarity between the concepts of Maitreya and Amitabha Buddha and their own concept of ‘One God(一神)’.
However, the concepts of Maitreya and Amitabha Buddha cannot be the main Buddhist concepts in terms of the Early Indian Buddhism that is based on the theory of anātman, because those concepts were developed later in central Asia where the Zoroastrian sense of God had been strongly believed in for a long time and might give a great influence on the religious Buddhism.
Besides the Early Chinese Buddhists embraced the idea of Maitreya and Amitabha Buddha as an absolute being, established newly the Buddhist ‘doctrine of the immortality of the soul(神不滅論)’, which is thought to root in the central Asian’s shamanistic belief in the soul. They explained those concepts mentioned above by utilizing the Neo-Taoist simple reductionism or the Taoist’s affirmation of paradox.
This paper discloses that the Chinese Nestorian exposed some serious problems when they explained their christology to Chinese people which was similar to what the early Chinese Buddhists did, because they could not have a deep understanding of Chinese Buddhism. This resulted in their failing to deliver Nestorian christology properly to Chinese people. In other words, they could not expect the problems occurred by following the Chinese Buddhist way of explanation on Maitreya and Amitabha Buddha when describing the concept of ‘One God(一神)’.
