渤海와 唐의 묘제 비교 : 貞孝公主墓를 중심으로 (On Balhae Princess Jung Hyo Tomb : A Comparative Study of Balhae Tombs with Tang Tombs)

초록

종교가 葬儀藝術에 있어 중요한 역할을 해 왔다는 것은 주지의 사실이다. 고대 한국 무덤의 경우, 종교는 주로 벽화를 통해 상징화되어 나타난다는 것을 알 수 있다. 그런데 이러한 상징이 무덤 구조 자체에서 표현되는 경우도 있다. 이 논문에서 다룬 발해 정효공주묘는 불교식 건축물인 塔으로 축조된 무덤이다. 이 무덤은 기존의 발해 전통 무덤인 石室封土墓와는 전혀 다른 구조이므로 주변국으로부터 수용된 묘제일 가능성이 높다. 또한 불교의 상징을 띠는 왕실의 무덤이라는 점에서 당시 발해 왕실과 불교의 밀접한 관계를 보여준다는 가능성도 상정해 볼 수 있다. 이처럼 정효공주묘의 구조는 무덤 건축의 특이성 뿐 아니라 탑을 왕실성원의 무덤으로 사용하고자 하였던 발해 왕실의 의도 또한 드러낸다는 점에서 중요하다. 이에 본 논문에서는 건축 구조를 중심으로 정효공주묘에 대해 논의해 보고자 하였다.
정효공주묘와 唐代의 탑은 부분적으로 차이는 있지만, 건축 구조를 통해 볼 때 분명 그 기원은 唐에 있음을 알 수 있다. 실제로 이를 唐代의 건축과 비교해 보면, 정효공주묘는 당 왕실에서 발원하였던 불탑과 동일한 구조이면서 동시에 당 왕실의 장례문화를 따르는 독특한 양식을 보인다는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 탑과 무덤이라는, 서로 상관없어 보이는 건축물들이 이렇듯 하나의 건축 구조를 공유할 수 있었던 것은 붓다의 시신을 안치한 공간을 황제의 무덤 구조와 동일하게 축조하고자 하였던 唐代 왕실 문화와의 상관관계에서 비롯된 것으로 보인다. 이에 근거한다면 붓다의 공간인 탑을 왕실묘제로 사용한 것은 墓主뿐아니라 발해왕실 자체가 숭배의 대상임을 시각화하고자 한 王卽佛 사상 때문인 것으로 여겨진다.
唐代의 무덤 중 불탑과 왕실의 묘제가 합쳐진 사례는 현재까지 보고된 바가 없다. 이는 唐의 불탑과 왕실의 묘제에 대한 인식이 발해에서 새로운 묘제로 전환되었음을 시사한다. 이러한 점에서 정효공주묘는 장의예술을 넘어 중세 동아시아 건축의 새로운 흐름을 제시하는 중요한 유적이라고 생각한다.

영어초록

Religion plays an important role in understanding funeral arts. In ancient Korean tombs, this religious tendency is normally implicated in mural paintings. Interestingly, it was found recently that some ancient Korean tombs imply religious trend within their structures. Balhae(渤海, 698-928) Princess Jung Hyo tomb(d.792), found in Mt. Longtou(?頭山), Longhai village(?海村), Longshui town(?水鄕), Helong city(和龍縣), Jilin province(吉林省) China in 1980 can be a good example of this. In the process of excavation, this tomb is presumed to have a structure that consists of tomb entrance way, entrance, passage way, and tomb chamber underground with a demolished pagoda on the top. The measurement of the tomb is 15m from north to south and 7m from east to west. The pagoda, which has a length of 5.6m on each side, is the representative symbol of Buddhism; hence, this suggests the alternation of burial costume during the period of imperial Balhae, which allowed funeral ritual in Buddhist manner. Such like this, the structure of Jung Hyo Tomb has great value in that it illustrates the contemporary tendency as well as the speciality of the tomb. Therefore, I intended to analyze the distinctive features of Jung Hyo Tomb with priority given to the structure.
First of all, I examined the background in which the pagoda had appeared as the tomb of the royal family members. As a result, there were changes in tombs during contemporary Balhae, and the pagodas influenced on the construction of the royal tomb in the process that the viewpoint of Chinese royal pagodas were delivered. Based on this background, I compared and analyzed Jung Hyo Tomb with the culture of Tang dynasty, especially with the representative architectures of the funeral and Buddhist cultures of Tang dynasty. Through these investigations, I could make sure that Jung Hyo Tomb had the identical structure with the pagodas which were patronized in the Tang dynasty, and at the same time, it had the unique style which followed the funeral culture of Tang dynasty. I could figure out that Jung Hyo Tomb was the tomb which Balhae recreated on the basis of the culture and institutions of Tang, because there had not been such examples like this up to now except of few cases like Magekdal tomb(馬滴澾墓) and Youngguang pagoda(?光塔). Furthermore, this fact reminds us of the ideology that the king was equal to Buddha in that the Balhae royal family used the pagoda, the space of Buddha as their tomb.
