統一新羅(668-935)와 唐(618-907)代의 書藝比較 (A Comparative Study on Calligraphy between the Unified Silla and the Tang Dynasty)

초록

통일신라는 한국 고대 사회에 있어서 정치적 안정과 문화적 번영을 이룩한 시기이다. 비록 국토와 인구는 크게 감소하였으나, 영토적 야욕을 지닌 당의 세력을 한반도 밖으로 축출시켜 민족의 자결권(自決權)을 확보하고, 문화적으로는 백제․고구려의 문화를 그대로 수용하여 새로운 민족문화를 매듭지었으며 唐나라의 文化 까지를 포용하여 새로운 민족문화를 발전시켰던 나라이다.
통일신라의 정치․사회적 안정은 문화의 융성을 가져와, 귀족들의 경제적 기반의 확대와 왕권의 전제화 과정으로 8～9세기는 일찍이 볼 수 없던 문화번영을 이루었다. 귀족 위주와 불교중심의 문화일망정, 민족문화의 근간으로서 통일신라문화는 일대도약을 가져왔다. 특히 통일신라문화에는 천문학과 수학․도량형 뿐만아니라 지리․의학․회화․서예 등에서 큰 발전을 보였다.
서예에 있어서 통일신라시기는 왕능(王陵)을 비롯하여 분묘(墳墓)에 까지 비(碑)가 세워지게 되었으며, 사찰에는 사적비(事蹟碑)와 조상기(造像記)․종명(鐘銘)․석탑기(石塔記)․석당기(石幢記) 등 많은 서적이 세워지게 되었다. 또 이 金石에 담긴 고도의 서예술은 수적으로는 唐에 비견할 바가 못되나 그 예술수준에 있어서는 그 누구와 비교하여도 뒤지지 않을 고도의 수준을 지니고 있어 한국금석의 古典이라 칭하여도 지나치지 않을 것이다.
본고는 통일신라시대는 중국의 문화가 본격적으로 유입되면서 서예 또한 당대의 서예예술을 적극적으로 수용하였다고 하는 전제하에 보았던 그동안의 관점에 대하여 재고하였다.
金石에 담긴 서예술은 수적으로는 唐에 비견할 바가 못되겠으나 그 예술수준에 있어서는 그 누구와 비교하여도 뒤지지 않을 고도의 수준을 지니고 있어 한국금석의 古典이라 칭하여도 지나치지 않을 것이다. 신라인들의 토속적 아름다움을 한껏 발휘하면서 한편으로는 동형반복을 피하여 다양한 변화를 추구하고 생기있는 필획으로 영활함을 더해주고 있다.

영어초록

In a history of ancient Korean society, the period of the Unified Silla has been considered as the time when it achieved political stability and cultural prosperity. Although its land size and population reduced dramatically at that time, the Unified Silla secured nation's self-determination by turning the power of the Tang Dynasty with a territorial desire out of the Korean Peninsula. In addition, in terms of culture, the Unified Silla completed a new national culture by accepting the original culture of Backje and Goguryeo, comprehended even the Tang Dynasty's culture, and developed the new national culture.
The Unified Silla's cultural prosperity was attributable to its political and social stability, and through the expansion of the nobility's economic foundation and the process of intensifying regality it achieved the prosperity of its culture that had never been witnessed in the 8th and 9th century. Although its culture placed the nobility and Buddhism over all other concerns, the Unified Silla's culture as the root of national one brought about the greatest take off. In particular, not only astronomy, mathematics, and weights and measures but also geography, medical science, pictures, and calligraphy developed overwhelmingly in the culture.
In the period of the Unified Silla, In terms of calligraphy, many tombstones were erected in royal tombs and graves, and many tombstones, such as tombstones for historic interests, documents of ancestors, the name of bells, documents of stone pagodas and shrines, were erected in many Buddhist temples. In addition, a high level of the art of calligraphy contained in this Chalcolithic can not be compared with that of the Tang Dynasty in terms of the number, but in terms of its artistic level, it will not be an overstatement to say that it is the classics of Korean Chalcolithic due to its highest level of the art.
This paper has reexamined the existing point of view under the assumption that calligraphy also actively accepted the art of calligraphy from the Tang Dynasty when an inflow of Chinese culture started in earnest.
Although the art of calligraphy contained in the Chalcolithic can not be compared with that of the Tang Dynasty in terms of the number, in terms of the artistic level, it will not be an overstatement to say that it is the classics of Korean Chalcolithic due to its highest level of the art. The art of calligraphy is showing the folk beauty of people of Silla as much as it can and adding its brilliant artistry through various change by avoiding the repetition of the same pattern and lively strokes.
