[三錦堂行錄]의 내용 고증과 편찬 과정 연구 (A Study on the Historical Verification and Compilation Process of The achievement Record of Samgeumdang)

초록

이 논문의 목적은 [三錦堂行錄]의 내용을 동시대 자료와 비교하여 사실 여부 및 과장과 각색 정도를 파악하고 어떠한 과정을 거쳐 이 행록이 간행되었는지를 살피는 데 있다. 보통 ‘행록’은 특정 인물의 행적과 관련된 사료를 엮어 만드는데, 인물을 현양하기 위해 만든다는 점에서는 문집과 같은 성격을 지닌다. 하지만 인물이 생전에 저술한 저작이 많아 이를 다수 수록한 문집과 달리 행록은 인물 생전의 저작이 적어 업적을 중심으로 해당 인물을 현양하기 위해 저술된다는 점에서 차이가 있다. 민제장은 생전에 남긴 저술이 적으며 이인좌의 난 진압에 공을 세운 인물이었기에 후손들이 행록의 형식을 빌려 그의 행적을 정리하여 [삼금당행록]으로 간행한 것이다.
여기서 필자는 후손이 가문의 인물 중 무인을 현양하고자 행록을 간행하였다는 보기 드문 사례에 흥미를 느껴 [삼금당행록] 연구를 시작하였다. 행록의 내용을 살펴본 결과 공통으로 언급되는 사항은 ① 1711년 신묘사행 당시 폭풍우로부터 인원을 구한 일 ② 이인좌의 난 진압에 이바지한 일이다. 전자는 내용으로만 판단하기에는 믿기 어려운 내용이며, 후자는「연보」에서 일자별로 민제장이 활약한 바를 언급하였으며, 이를 그의 가장 큰 공훈으로 부각하였기에 필자는 동시대 사료와의 대조를 통해 해당 내용들을 고증하였고, 그 결과 내용에 적지 않은 과장과 각색이 가미되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 필자는 이 과정에서 보통 가문의 필요성, 시대의 필요성에 의해 과장과 각색이 가미되는 것은 일반적이나 왜 이러한 과장과 각색을 가미하면서까지 조상을 현양하고자 했던 것인지 그 의미도 결론 부분에서 도출하였다.
마지막으로 [삼금당행록]에서는 민제장이 이인좌의 난 진압에 공을 세웠음에도 합당한 포증을 받지 못한 점을 주장하는 내용이 많은데, 그 내용처럼 민제장이 과연 합당한 보상을 받지 못하였는지도 살펴보고, 이 책이 어떠한 과정을 거쳐 간행되었는지도 분석하였다.

영어초록

The document of Samgeumdang (三錦堂行錄) is a record of Min Je-jang (閔濟章, 1671–1729), written by his grandson Min Baek-won (閔百遠, 1728–1784) and later compiled and published in 1877 by Min Ju-hyeon (閔胄顯, 1808–1882). According to the preface by Kim Jong-hu, Min Baek-won wrote this book because he deeply resented that despite Min Je-jang's significant contributions in suppressing the Musinnyeon Rebellion (1728), his achievements were appropriated by the authorities of the time, preventing him from receiving due rewards.
The document consistently highlights two major accomplishments of Min Je-jang. The first took place in 1711 (37th year of King Sukjong's reign) when he was accompanying Im Su-gan (任守幹) as part of an official diplomatic mission to Japan. While traveling near Tsushima Island, they encountered a severe storm that nearly capsized their ship. Min Je-jang personally jumped into the sea, pulled the ship ashore, and saved many lives. The second achievement occurred in 1728 (4th year of King Yeongjo's reign) during the Lee In-jwa Rebellion, when he served as the county magistrate of Anseong. Alongside his younger brother Min Je-man (閔濟萬), he contributed significantly to quelling the rebellion. The latter event is given particular emphasis in the Chronological Biography, where it is recorded in detail on a daily basis, presenting it as Min Je-jang’s greatest accomplishment. However, since many aspects of these accounts do not appear in contemporary historical sources, further verification is necessary.
This study examines the two achievements of Min Je-jang recorded in the Travel Record of Samgeumdang by comparing them with contemporary records. The analysis reveals that considerable exaggeration and embellishment were incorporated. Literary collections often serve as a means to glorify their authors and enhance the status of their associated groups. When an author's own writings are scarce, their life and works are inevitably subject to distortion. Although the Travel Record of Samgeumdang is not a literary collection, it shares the same nature, as it documents the deeds and writings of a specific individual. Therefore, it is not free from such limitations.
Given this, why was it necessary to glorify the ancestor and the family through exaggeration and embellishment? The conclusion of this study aims to explore the significance behind this effort. Furthermore, it will examine the differences among the Biographical Record, Epitaph, and Chronological Biography, which were compiled at different times. Additionally, this study will assess whether Min Je-jang was indeed unjustly denied due rewards, as claimed in documents such as the Official Notices, Petitions to the Throne, and Appeals to the King. Lastly, it will investigate the process through which this book was published.
