고구려 원정에 나타난 隋·唐의 공성전술 (Siege Tactics of Sui and Tang Dynasties in Expedition to Goguryeo)

초록

전근대의 전쟁에서 결정적인 공격 대상은 성곽이었다. 攻城戰과 守城戰은 전쟁의 핵심이었고, 전쟁 승패와 직결되는 사안이었다. 중국은 春秋戰國時代 이래로 수많은 공성전이 전개되었고, 이 과정에서 다양한 무기와 전술이 개발되었다. 수·당은 고구려 원정을 감행하였고, 이 과정에서 攻城武器를 다수 선보이게 되었다. 고구려는 방어의 입장에서 중국의 공성전술을 체감하며 守城戰術을 발달시켰다. 현재 기록 상에서 확인되는 고구려 원정 당시의 주요 공성무기로는 樓車 ·衝車·雲梯·地道·抛車·土山이 있다.
본고에서는 각 공성무기의 성격을 파악하고 역사적으로 어떻게 활용되었는지 살펴보았다. 누거는 적을 감시하고 성벽 너머의 적을 공격할 수 있었으며, 충거는 성문과 성벽을 부수고 성에 접근하여 공격하는 공성무기였다. 운제는 수많은 인원이 성벽을 넘어갈 수 있게 하였고, 지도는 땅굴을 통해 성벽 아래로 들어갈 수 있게 하였다. 포거는 돌을 날려 성벽을 부수었고, 토산은 성벽보다 높은 높이의 인공산을 만들어 공격하는 방식이다.
이러한 공성무기는 전선에서 복합적으로 활용되었다. 隋·唐은 기존의 공성무기와 공성전술을 더욱더 체계적으로 발전시켜 고구려 원정에 나섰다. 고구려는 과거의 경험과 현재의 정보를 바탕으로 중국의 공성무기와 공성전술에 대한 지식과 대응책을 습득하였다. 결국 적극적인대응을 통해 고수전쟁의 遼東城 전투, 고당전쟁의 安市城 전투에서 승리할 수 있었다. 또한 삼국간의 각축전 상황에서 주변에 영향을 미치게 되었다.

영어초록

In pre-modern warfare, the decisive target of attack was the castle. The siege warfare and the defense castle warfare were the core of the war and were directly related to the victory. In China, numerous siege wars were conducted since the Warring States period and a large variety of weapons and tactics were developed. Sui and Tang conducted expeditions to Goguryeo and many siege weapons were presented during the wars. Goguryeo experienced China's siege tactics from the defensive perspective, in this way they developed their defensive tactics. The siege weapons of the Goguryeo expedition that are found in the current historical records include chariot with a turret( 樓車), battering ram(衝車), aerial ladder(雲梯), underpass(地道), catapult(抛車), and earthy mountain(土山).
The study examines characteristics of each siege weapon and how they were utilized in history. To start with, a chariot with a turret was used to monitor the enemy and attack the enemy beyond the wall, while a battering ram was a siege weapon that could not only break the gates and walls but approach and attack the castle. An aerial ladder made it possible for a large number of people to go over the wall. An underpass allowed the attackers to enter under the wall through a tunnel. Catapults blow stones to break the fortress wall. An earthy mountain is another tactic piling up earth higher than the fortress so that the army could climb up and attack the wall.
These siege weapons were used in a complex way on the front lines. Sui and Tang went on an expedition to Goguryeo by systematically developing siege weapons and siege tactics of the past. Goguryeo acquired knowledge and countermeasures for Chinese siege weapons and siege tactics based on past experiences and current information. Therefore they were able to win the Battle of Yodong Castle (遼東城) in the Goguryeo-Sui War and the Battle of Ansi Castle (安市城) in the Goguryeo-Tang War. It also had an influence on the surroundings in the situation of the rivalry between the three kingdoms.
