도림당 장일의 수행과 호법활동 (Dorimdang Jang-il’s Seon Meditation Practice and Protecting Dharma Activities)

초록

한국 비구니의 사표가 되는 도림당道林堂 장일長一이 살았던 시대는 국가를 잃은 고난의 시기였다. 장일은 사회적 고난을 순응하지 않고 주인의식으로혁파하려고노력하였다. 여성이란열악한사회적위치에 서 굴욕과압제에서벗어나려고 하였다. 독립운동 집안 출신의장일은 여성으로안락한 삶이 아니라호국의 삶을 지향하였다. 장일에게 있어 서 출가는 사회적인 독립운동을, 호국을 호법으로 변용한 것이다. 부처님의가르침대로 인류 모두가안락한 삶을 영위하는 것이다. 출가 는 현실 상황의 한계점을 극복하는 과정이었다.
장일은평생불설佛說을근거로수행하였다. 지금 이생이외는없다는 절실한 심정으로 화두 수선修禪에 힘썼다. ‘3년 결사’ 등 인연이 되면 안거 수선하였다. 인연법을 중시하고 무소유를 실천하였다. 엄중한 수행을 통해, 자기 자신을 혁신하고자 하였다.
장일은 대중을 위한 일이라면 적극적으로 동참하였다. 결사운동과 불교정화운동에동참하여수행전통을올바르게세우는데일조하였다. 내원암을여법한수행도량으로일구고대중들이안거수선에전념하도 록 외호하였다. 후배 비구니들을위해화주와 행정력을 발휘하여 수행 도량을중건∙유지하였다.한국불교비구니교단을최성기에올려놓은 인물 중의한명이다. 시대변화 속에서안주하지않고사회적으로 소외 된 여성의 역량을 강화하였다.

영어초록

Dorim Jangil—a bhikkhuni whom many consider a paragon of virtue among Korean nuns—endured great suffering when Korea lost its sovereignty to the Japanese. Instead of being beat- en into submission by such hardships, she tried to overcome it with a sense of ownership. Despite her low social status as a woman at the time, Jangil tried to escape the humiliation and oppression she and other women faced. Coming from a family of independence activists, she sought not a complacent life, then expected of women, but a life of actively defending her country. For her, entering monastic life was an act of trans- forming both the Korean independence movement and the ideal of protecting the state into action to protect the dharma. In other words, she desired more than anything for all humanity to live in peace in accordance with the Buddha’s teachings. Becoming a Buddhist nun was part of a process to overcome the limitations of her social status.
Jangil practiced Buddhism based on the Buddha’s teachings all her life. She devoted herself to the practice of hwadu medi- tation with a sincere feeling that the present life was all that mattered. She practiced Seon meditation whenever the oppor- tunity arose, including joining a “three-year practice community.” She valued the Buddhist law of interdependent arising and practiced non-possession. Through strict practice, she sought to reform herself.
Jangil actively worked to benefit her fellow practitioners. By participating in the practice community movement and the pu- rification movement of Korean Buddhism, she contributed to establishing a proper practice tradition. She developed Naewonam Hermitage into a practice center that followed the correct dharma, and gave practitioners all the support they needed to devote themselves to Seon practice during intensive retreat seasons. Employing her talents as a fund raiser and ad- ministrator, she rebuilt and maintained Naewonam Hermitage for junior nuns. She was one who guided the Korean bhikkhuni community to greater glory. Without resting on her laurels in the midst of trying times, she strove to empower socially margi- nalized women.
