초록

The uniquely liberal and open environment of the Tang period (唐代) provided the basis that led to the universalization to travel during the Tang dynasty. One of the important conditions for this environment was the various circumstances of stability in the society, which is worth being noted. Of such circumstances, the various accommodation facilities that were densely dispersed in all parts of the Tang dynasty sufficiently provided for the environment to increase in traveling.
With the emergence of the literati class as the main customers for the accommodation facilities during the Tang period, the function of these accommodation facilities reached beyond its function simply as inns and expanded its “platform” function. As such, these accommodation facilities were intricate in establishing tight networks by promoting the expansion of information through the exchanges between the literati. Thus, the literati rose to a status of importance in the society and gaining fame through the state examination system. The gateway through the state examinations was small, and the literati had to expand their literary talents as far as possible. Therefore, they had to seek various experiences and topics for creative writing. As such, the literati chose the method of traveling as the best mode to meet variety of people and gain diverse experiences. In the process, the communication among the literati became active and voluntary. At the center of this development were the accommodation facilities with their extended function as “platforms,” and these places was intricate in the expansion of information.
In conclusion, although the “platform” of the Tang period is incomparable to the “platform” of today in which millions of information can be circulated every second, they functioned as a point of mediation in which liberal and multidirectional information exchange and expansion occurred. Moreover, they also functioned as an intersection and distribution point for different cultures. As places in which such interchange and exchanges occurred, accommodation facilities were an important producer of values unique and significant to the Tang period.
