Since the 2010s, research on Tang Dynasty eunuchs has consistently produced significant results. The development of this field can be seen across several key aspects. First, research has maintained continuity with traditional topics, covering nearly all areas of previous scholarship, reflecting the integration of earlier research findings into more recent studies. Second, the previously predominant view of eunuch power through a narrow lens of political history has given way to a more nuanced exploration of the essential significance of eunuch authority, moving beyond simplistic interpretations of their arbitrary use of power. Third, a more comprehensive understanding of eunuch factions and their activities has emerged, examining not only the expansion of their influence but also their organizational structures, demonstrating that eunuchs were an integral part of the Tang Dynasty's social and political fabric. Fourth, detailed investigations into specific cases and the discovery of new historical information have continued. Re-examinations of institutions such as the Neizhusishi(內諸司使), Shencejun(神策軍), Jianjun(監軍), and eunuch families have prompted revisions of previous understandings, expanding the body of historical knowledge. Fifth, the increasing use of tomb epitaphs and inscriptions as primary sources has injected new energy into the study of eunuchs, allowing for a more concrete analysis of the institutions associated with them and the political context of the period. These findings have also shed light on the collective consciousness and cultural practices of eunuch groups, revealing them not merely as instruments of power but as a distinct social entity with their own culture.
