초록

19세기말 인천항 지역은 1883년 개항 이후 국내·외의 상업자본이 집중화되었고, 상품유통과 시장권이 형성·발전되면서 근대 상업도시로 성장하고 있었다. 본 논문은 光武 2년(1898)에 작성된 인천항 답동·외동 호적을 바탕으로 하여, 개항 후에 인천항 지역이 근대 상업도시로 전환되는 과정 속에서 인천항 답동·외동의 거주민 양상과 특성이 어떻게 나타나고 있는지 살펴보았다.
답동 호적(184호)과 외동 호적(225호)에 기재된 호주와 동거친속의 인적사항을 바탕으로 ① 답동과 외동 호주의 연령, 직업, 동거인, 가택내용 그리고 가족유형 등을 비교 분석하여 당시 인천항 답동·외동에서 나타나는 상업적 가족구조와 성격 등을 살펴보았다. ② 19세기말 인천항 지역이 근대 상업도시로 성장하면서 발생하게 된 다수의 인구유입과 이동에 대한 국가의 인구파악·관리 방식을 살펴보았다. 1896년 「戶口調査規則」·「戶口調査細則」에 의해 작성된 광무 2년(1898) 인천항 답동·외동 호적은 이전 시기의 호적보다 철저한 인구파악과 관리를 목적으로 하였다. 그런데 인천항 답동·외동 호적은 다른 지역에 비해서 남녀 인구수와 남녀 인구합에서 다수의 誤記가 나타나고 있었다. 이에 인천항 답동·외동 호적에서 나타나는 남녀인구수와 인구합의 오기 사례를 분석하였으며, 이러한 오기를 寄口·雇傭人의 존재와 성격문제 그리고 인천항 거주민의 인구 파악·관리방식과 관련하여 살펴보았다.
이를 통해서 1898년 인천항 답동·외동 호적 내용은 19세기말 인천항 지역이 근대적 상업지역으로 성장하면서 다양한 인구가 유입되는 과정 속에서 그들만의 인적 구성과 거주형태를 보여주는 것이며, 당시 국가의 대민통치방식 속에서 나타난 인천항 거주민의 존재양상과 특성을 보여주는 것으로 이해하였다.

영어초록

In the late 19th century, the Incheon Harbor area grew as a modern commercial city in accordance with the concentration of domestic and foreign commercial capital since the port opening in 1883, and the formation and development of commercial product distribution and marketing sphere. This study aimed to examine resident features and characteristics of Incheon Harbor Dap-dong and Oi-dong area in the course of transformation to a modern commercial city after the port opening of the area on the basis of Incheon Harbor Dap-dong and Oi-dong census registration composed in 1898.
Based on the personal information of family heads and their cohabitants in Dap-dong census registration (No. 184) and Oi-dong census registration (No. 225), ① age and occupation of the family head, cohabitant, housing details, and family type of Dap-dong and Oi-dong area were compared and analyzed in order to figure out the commercial family structure and characteristics in the Incheon Harbor Dap-dong and Oi-dong area of the time. ② the national population control and management method against incoming and movement of population caused by the growth of modern commercial city of the Incheon Harbor area in the late 19th century were examined. Incheon Harbor Dap-dong and Oi-dong census registration of 1898 prepared based on 「Census inspection regulation 」 and 「Census Inspection details regulation」 of 1896 aimed to figure out and control population stricter than a previous census registration. But, Incheon Harbor Dap-dong and Oi-dong census registration had multiple typographical errors in the number of male and female population and sum of population compared to other areas. Thus, this study analyzed the typographical error cases in the number of male and female population and sum of population in this census registration. As a result, this study proved that such typographical errors had a close relation with the existence and nature of sojourners and employees, and a method of figuring out and controlling population and of Incheon Harbor residents.
In consequence, the details of Incheon Harbor Dap-dong and Oi-dong census registration of 1898 showed unique human structure and residential type in the midst of influx of various types of population along with the growth of the Incheon Harbor area as a modern commercial area in the late 19th century, and it also shows unique existence features and characteristics of Incheon Harbor residents that were found in the national population control and management.
