전주 전통의례의 가치와 전주다움 (Value of Religious Ceremonies and Attributes of Jeonju)

초록

이 글에서는 전주의 전통의례의 전승 양상을 살펴보고 그 가지를 찾아보았다. 전주의 전통의례는 다양한 문화가 결합되어 있다. 불교 의식, 유교 의식, 도교와 관련있는 의식, 무속 의식, 마을 공동체 의식 등이 전승되고 있다. 전주 이씨 관향지라는 상징적인 의미가 조경단대제에 들어있으며 이는 국행제의로까지 확장될 여지가 있다. 또한 마을 공동체 신앙과 불교 의식은 민중 중심의 의식이다. 현재는 계층이 사라졌지만, 전주에 전승되고 있는 여러 전통의례의 연원에는 과거 다양한 계층의 의식이 그대로 전승되고 있다. 나름의 격식을 갖춘 불교 전통의례와 유교 전통의례가 전승되고 있는데 이 둘은 모두 의례가 규범화되어 있다. 반면 마을 공동체 전통의례에는 농업이 중심이 되던 전통문화의 흐름이 그대로 남아있다. 이는 전주가 도시와 농촌이라는 복합성을 가지고 있다는 의미이다. 그래서 복숭아 재배, 콩나물 재배가 전주의 대표적인 무형유산이 될 수 있다. 화려한 음식문화와 함께 소박한 음식문화가 함께 온전하게 전승될 수 있다. 어쩌면 이러한 복합성이 전주비빔밥을 낳게 한 것일 수도 있다. 이처럼 다양한 전통의례는 다양한 공연예술의 산실이 된다. 음악의 경우로 한정해본다면 불교 음악, 유교 음악, 무속 음악이 모두 전승되는 곳이 전주이다. 그래서 다양한 공연예술이 무형문화재로 지정되었다. 아울러 전통의례가 발달하기 위해서는 사람과 물산이 집결되어야 하고 이러한 흐름 속에서 다양한 공예기술이 모인다. 전주에 유독 공예기술이 무형문화재로 지정된 것이 많은 연유이다. 풍성한 음식문화로 대표되는 연회문화가 발달할 여지도 있다. 다양한 문화를 바탕으로 한 전주가 무형유산에 대한 관심을 제고한다면 이는 다른 여러 도시의 모범적인 사례가 될 수 있다.

영어초록

This is an article devised to take a look at the trend of succession for the religious ceremony of Jeonju and search for its value. The religious ceremony of Jeonju is integrated with various cultures. The Buddhist ceremony, Confucius ceremony, Taoism-related ceremony, shamanic ceremony, village community ceremony and so forth are handed down. The symbolic implication in the hometown of Jeonju Lee Clan is contained within the Jogyeongdan Great Ceremony and there is a room to expand into the Gukhaengjeoui (national ritual service). In addition, the village community religion and Buddhist ceremony are public-oriented ceremony. The class has been disappeared for now, but in the origin of several religious ceremonies handed down in Jeonju, the ceremony of various classes in the past has been handed down. The Buddhist religious ceremony and Confucius religious ceremony equipped with respective formality have been succeeded and both of these are standardized in all ceremonies. On the other hand, the shamanic religious ceremony and community religious ceremony are not standardized yet. Jogyeongdan Great Ceremony has become a representative religious ceremony with splendid spotlight of mass media to represent sophisticated urban culture. In the meantime, in the village community religious ceremony, the flow of traditional culture with the agriculture as the core part is remained just the way it is. It means that Jeonju contains the integral part of the urban and rural area. Therefore, cultivation of peach and bean sprout may be a representative intangible cultural property of Jeonju. Together with exquisite food culture, the plain food culture may be entirely and completely succeeded together. Perhaps such integral feature may bring the famous Jeonju Bibimbap. As such, various religious ceremonies could be a birth place of diverse performing arts. If it is limited to the case of music, Buddhist music, Confucius music, and shamanic music are all handed down in Jeonju. Hence, various performing arts have been designated as an intangible cultural property. Furthermore, for the religious ceremony to advance, people and goods have to be gathered together, and under such a flow, various performing arts could be gathered. This is the reason for Jeonju to have significant number of art works designated as intangible cultural properties. There is a room to advance the banquet culture as it represents an enriched food culture. On the basis of various cultures, if Jeonju may enhance the interests in intangible properties, it could be a role example for other cities.
