성속(聖俗)의 이중구조를 통해 본 비교불교민속론 －싯다르타 탄생담의 연꽃 모티브를 사례로－ (The Dual Structure inComparative Buddhist Folklore －Focusing on the lotus motif of the Birth Story of Siddhartha－)

초록

본고의 연구목적은 불교민속의 이중구조를 비교불교민속론을 통해 재고하려는 데에 있다. 분석대상은 싯다르타 탄생담의 연꽃 모티브였고 이로써 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 즉, 범어 빨리어 경전이 전하려던 메시지의 본질이 한역 경전으로 계승되는 경우가 다수 남아있지만 단절과 변화 또한 엄연히 존재하였다. 그런데 유사한 현상은 한중일에 걸쳐 발견되므로 비교 분석을 위해서는 비교불교민속론이 불가결하였다.
단절과 변화의 이유는 첫째, 범어 빨리어 경전이 인도 신화와 불교의 경계에서 형성되었으나 한역 경전은 불교와 중국문화의 경계에서 번역되었다는 배경을 들 수 있다. 그리고 둘째, 한역 경전이 한국과 일본으로 전파되면서 나라마다의 문화적 특성이 경전의 해석과 이해에 영향을 끼쳤다는 점 또한 빼놓을 수가 없다. 그리고 이러한 변화 양상은 각 지역의 불교회화나 그림 설법에 그대로 흔적을 남기게 되었다.
계승과 단절 및 변화는 연꽃 모티브를 통해 구체적으로 드러났으며 성속의 이중구조는 그 핵심이었다. 이중구조는 본질과 방편을 의미하는데 초기 경전의 본질이 계승되는 경우는 본질과 방편이 서로 일치하므로 일원론적 이중구조가 된다. 그러나 단절과 변화는 본질과 이를 은유하는 방편이 상호간에 연결고리가 없는 변별적 관계로 변질되므로 이원론적 이중구조로 이해할 수 있다.
급기야는 본질과 방편이 이율배반적인 관계로까지 왜곡되기도 하는데 이어지는 다른 사례 연구에서 하나 둘 밝혀질 것이다.
불교민속의 이중구조를 비교불교민속학적 관점에서 바라본 본고는 이론 구축을 위한 시론이므로 후속 연구의 축적을 통해 연구방법론적 체계화를 도모하고자 한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to reconsider the dual structure of Buddhist folklore through comparative Buddhist folklore. The lotus motif in the Siddhartha birth story was analyzed and the following conclusions were reached. That is, while there are many cases where the essence of the Sanskrit and Pali scriptures was passed on to the Chinese scriptures, there are also significant disconnections and changes. However, similar phenomena are found throughout the three countries, Korea, China, and Japan, making comparative Buddhist folklore indispensable for comparative analysis.
The reasons for the disconnections and changes include, first, the fact that the Sanskrit-Pali scriptures were formed at the boundary between Indian mythology and Buddhism, while the Chinese scriptures were translated at the boundary between Buddhism and Chinese culture. Secondly, as the Chinese scriptures spread to Korea and Japan, the cultural characteristics of each country influenced the interpretation and understanding of the scriptures. These changes were reflected in the local Buddhist paintings and pictorial sermons. Succession, disconnection, and change are embodied in the lotus motif, and the dual structure of sacred and secular is at its core.
The dual structure refers to essence and metaphor, and when the essence of an early scriptures is passed on, the essence and method are consistent with each other, resulting in a monistic dual structure. However, disconnection and change can be understood as a dualistic dual structure because the essence and its metaphor are transformed into a discrete relationship with no connection to each other. In some cases, the dualism between essence and metaphor is even distorted into a dichotomous relationship, as we will see in the following case studies.
This paper, which examines the dual structure of Buddhist folklore from the perspective of comparative Buddhist folklore, is a theory-building exercise, so it is intended to provide a methodological systematization through the accumulation of subsequent studies.
