초록

Cinderella Man, filmed by Ron Howard in 2005, is a salient movie which shows aspects and reality of “The Great Depression.” The Great Depression lasted from 1929 through 1933. Based on the true story of a boxer named James J. Braddock, this movie focuses on how a father as a patriarch committed himself to protect his family from disintegrating. He was a heroic boxer in New Jersey, where represents a place of absence and lack resulted from The Great Depression. Also, this movie is combined with chronological and spatial backgrounds altogether. There are three significant places for spatiality: a boxing ring in Madison Square Garden, Braddock’s home, and a seaport. As a boxer, Braddock can find himself at best in the ring. His home is a place for his family not to disintegrate. He tried to do everything to protect his family and his own dignity. The seaport is a place which provides him with money for the basic needs of his family. In spite of all these things, he is called “Cinderella Man” since his winning is thought to be a kind of windfall. However, he seems to be a subjective man to play his role as a father. He knows the meaning of fatherhood and can live to display his subjectivity in three different spaces as mentioned above.
