『記聞叢話』에 나타난 科擧談의 양상과 특징 (Aspects and Features of the Stories on the Civil Service Examination in Kimunchonghwa)

초록

과거 제도의 본질을 파악하기 위해서는 과거 관련 자료가 실린 다양한 문헌을 살펴야 한다. 그 노력의 일환으로 본고에서는 특정 야담에 나타난 과거담에 집중하기로 한다. 조선 후기에 편저된 것으로 알려진 『記聞叢話』는 야담 중에서도 담화 수가 가장 많고, 넓은 범위의 야담을 집대성하여 야담에 나타난 과거담의 전모를 살피기에 유리하였다.
『記聞叢話』 소재 과거담은 총 70편이다. 이는 주로 15～17세기 수험생이 과거 시험을 준비하는 과정에 있었던 일을 소재로 하였다. 『記聞叢話』 소재 과거담은 일화의 성격에 따라 크게 3가지로 나눌 수 있다. 첫째, 사회의 구조적 모순을 비판하는 일화다. 『記聞叢話』에서는 사회 제도가 악용된 사례와 당대 부조리함을 비판하는 일화가 실렸지만 그 수가 극히 적었다. 19세기에 편저되었으리라 추정되는 『記聞叢話』는 당대 과폐를 고발하여 사회 구조적 모순을 비판하기보다 과폐를 통해 임금의 성덕을 칭송하고 당시 시관의 안목과 청렴함을 부각시키는 일화가 많다. 즉, 『記聞叢話』 소재 과거담은 사회 비판보다는 과거제 운용의 바람직한 본보기를 보여줌으로써 교훈성을 강조한 것이다. 둘째, 기이한 체험과 예언을 보여주는 일화다. 『記聞叢話』 소재 과거담에는 꿈속에서 합격자의 이름을 예언하거나, 과거 합격을 가리키는 동물이 등장한다. 야담에서의 기이성은 그것 자체로 독자의 흥미를 불러일으키지만, 『記聞叢話』 소재 과거담에는 이미 과거에 합격한 실존 인물과 관련된 기이한 체험과 예언을 서술하여 그 인물의 현달함에 대한 당위성을 보여주려고 하였다. 셋째, 장원에 대한 자부심과 집착을 보여주는 일화다. 과거 시험에서 장원이 되면 남들보다 일찍 요직에 오를 뿐 아니라 개인으로서나 가문으로서 명망이 높아졌다. 따라서 장원한 사람들끼리 정기적으로 계모임을 갖거나, 2등을 하여 평생 아쉬움을 드러내는 일은 당대 분위기상 충분히 있을 수 있는 일이다. 『記聞叢話』 소재 과거담에서는 이러한 일화가 조선 전기를 배경으로 하며, 사회 구조적 문제를 비판하거나 서사의 긴장감과 흥미를 강조하기 위해 활용되지 않았다. 19세기에는 별시로 인재를 뽑는 경우가 많아져 조선 전기보다 장원의 위상이 상대적으로 떨어졌음을 감안한다면, 『記聞叢話』에 등장한 장원과 관련한 일화는 당대의 현실을 반영하기보다 특권계층에 편입되고픈 당대 사람들의 열망과 바람이 반영되었다고 추측할 수 있다.

영어초록

In order to understand the essence of the state examination system, it is necessary to consider various materials containing state examination-related data. Therefore, in this paper, I will focus on the state examination stories in specific yadam. Kimunchonghwa, compiled in the late Joseon Dynasty, has the largest number of stories among yadams, and is suitable for examining the full picture of the state examination stories as it has compiled a wide range of yadams.
There are a total of 70 stories about the state examination. This was mainly based on what happened to students in the 15th to 17th centuries in the process of preparing for the state examination. According to the characteristics of stories, the state examination stories of Kimunchonghwa can be divided into three major categories.
First, it is a story that criticizes the structural contradictions of society. In Kimunchonghwa, there were stories criticizing the abuse of the social system and the absurdity of the time, but the number of stories was extremely small. Kimunchonghwa, compiled in the 19th century, has many stories that praise the king’s virtue and highlight the insight and integrity of the examination supervisors at the time, rather than criticizing the social structural contradictions by accusing the bad custom of the examinations of the time. In other words, Kimunchonghwa’s story of the state examination emphasized the morality by showing a desirable example of the operation of the state examination system rather than criticizing society.
Second, it is a story that shows strange experiences and prediction. In Kimunchonghwa’s story of the state examination, there are animals that predict the names of the applicants who passed the state exam in their dreams. The strangeness of Yadam attracts the reader’s interest, but Kimunchonghwa’s story of the state examination tried to show that the person’s success was natural by describing strange experiences and prediction related to a real person who had already passed the exam.
Third, it is a story showing pride and obsession with being the first grade. Since the Korea Dynasty, there have been cases in which people who have been in first grade regularly have gatherings or feel regret for life because they have been in second grade. However, in the 19th century, there were talents were selected through special examinations, and the status of the first grade was relatively lower than in the early Joseon Dynasty. If so, it can be assumed that the stories related to the first grade in Kimunchonghwa reflected the wishes of those who wanted to be incorporated into the privileged class.
