양촌천 ‘을무늬’ 유래담의 지역배경적 고찰 (A Review on Regional Features of Folktales of the Origin of ‘Eulmunui’ in Yangchoncheon)

초록

필자는 한국의 현지 구전전설을 찾아 연구하는 데에 관심을 두고 이곳저곳 현지를 답사하고 자료를 모으는 데 힘을 기울이고 있다. 사회의 급속한 변화에 따라 전설 자료의 구전력이 갈수록 약해지고 있어 서둘러 자료를 널리 조사하고 정리하는 일이 시급함을 절감하기 때문이다. 한 지역에 전승되는 전설은 그 지역의 자연, 문화, 역사의 복합적 소산이다. 그런만큼 현지 전설 자료의 조사와 이해는 지역의 고유성과 정체성의 뿌리를 찾는 일의 하나로 인식되고 깊은 관심 속에 이루어질 필요가 있다. 이 글은 이러한 취지에서 논산시 양촌천 일대에 전승되는 ‘을무늬’ 유래담의 현지 구전자료를 널리 모아 연구한 것이다. 필자가 이 글에서 살핀 주된 내용은 다음과 같다.
첫째 논산 양촌천의 특징은 무엇이고 그와 관련하여 ‘을무늬’라는 이름은 왜 생겼는가.
둘째 ‘강효자’의 명성과 ‘강효자고기’라는 새로운 이름이 출현한 이유는 무엇인가.
셋째 을무늬 유래담이 성립된 사실적 기반은 무엇이고, 이 전설이 전승되어온 지역문화적 배경은 무엇인가.
넷째 위 전설의 전승되는 일정 지역의 권역은 어떻게 구획되는가.
다섯째 위 전설 표현 내용으로 본 전승지역의 지역성은 무엇인가.
본 연구를 통하여 을무늬 전설의 지역적 고유성을 확인한 것은 필자로서 큰 보람이었다. 동시에, 이제까지 수집되지 않았던 강효자 전설의 새로운 전승유형을 다수 발견함으로써 강효자 전설이야말로 역대 한국의 효자 전설을 대표한다고 할 수 있을 정도로 그 전승유형이 매우 다채롭다는 사실을 새롭게 알게 된 것 또한 의외의 중요한 성과였다. 강효자 전설의 그러한 중요성에 비추어 본고를 시발점으로 하여 앞으로 강효자의 효행이 더욱 널리 알려지게 되고, 위 전설에 대한 연구도 더 깊이있게 전개되어 나가기를 기대한다.

영어초록

I have been putting my effort to explore Korea’s local legends of word-of-mouth by visiting the locations with those legends and collecting the data. However, it is urgently needed to hurry for a wider investigation into the data and to organize them as a rapid change of our society has weakened the power of word-of-mouth. A legend inherited to a specific region is an integrated outcome of the nature, culture, and history of the region. For that reason, it is necessary for the investigation and understanding of the date of local legend to be regarded and conducted as an important project looking for the uniqueness and identity of the region.
Therefore, this study has been conducted to look into the local data of word-of-mouth of the folktales of ‘Eulmunui’ origin inherited around Yangchon creek in Nonsan city. Major findings of this study are as following: First, what are the characteristics of Yangchon creek in Nonsan city? and why did the name of ‘Eulmunui’ come out? Second, why did the reputation of an exemplary son Kang and a new name such as an exemplary son Kang occur? Third, what is the factual base on which folktales of ‘Eulmunui’ and what is the regional background of this legends’s being handed down. Fourth, how was the section of a certain area divided? Lastly, what are the regional features of the inherited area based on expressive contents of the above legend?It is greatly meaningful to confirm the regional uniqueness of Eulmunui legend through this study. At the same time, another achievement of this study was to be able to discover new type of word-of-mouth in an exemplary son Kang that has not been collected so far. In specific, it was disclosed that the legend of exemplary son Kang itself can be a representative legend of Korea in the field of the legend of an exemplary son, which was revealed to have various types of word-of-mouth. Based on the findings of this study, I hope that the remarkable filial behavior of an exemplary son Kang should go current far and wide along with more actively advanced development of the study on an exemplary son Kang’s legend.
