초록

본 연구는 조선 후기의 장편소설인 · 연작에 등장하는 군담(軍談)을 연구 대상으로 삼는다. 연작 속 군담의 실 체를 밝히고 그것을 타 장편소설의 군담과 비교 검토함으로써, 해당 연작에 대한 작품론적 분석의 작품론적 이해를 높이는 한편, 군담과 관련한 조선 후기 소설사의 특징적인 면면들을 새롭게 고찰하고자 한다. 연작의 군담은 기존 고전소설 군담의 양식을 일정하게 답습하면서도, 도합 15회에 걸친 방대한 서술 분량과 개별 군담의 상호 차별화를 통해 다양한 소재와 대결 방식을 망라하면서 군담 특유의 긴장 과 쾌감을 끌어낸다. 또한 연작으로서의 서사적 지속성을 염두에 두면서 각 군담이 적절히 기능하도록 배치하고 있다. 한편 남성 주인공의 무인 기질을 강조하여 다른 장편소설과 차별점을 두면서도, 여성의 군사적 활약은 크게 제약하는 보수적인 경향을 나타낸다. <명주보월빙> 연작은 장편소설 속 군담의 서술 기법을 망라하되, 그 구체적 활용에서 한층 발전적이고 세련된 단계에 이른 모습을 보여준다. 하지만 남‧녀 인물의 형상화 문제와 같이, 기존의 장편소설 문법을 탈피하면서도 다른 한켠에서는 그 범주 안에 머무르는 과도기적 양상을 보인다. 이 연작의 군담을 통해 우리는 장편소설의 기존 성과를 집대성하는 높은 완성도를 확인하는 한편으로, 새로운 소설 유형과 창작 방법론이 대두되는 소설사의 변천 속에서 그에 대한 순응과 거부의 양면이 혼재하는 양태를 읽어낼 수 있다.

영어초록

This study takes as its object of study the military narratives(軍談) that appear in the series <Myeongjubowolbing> and <Yunhajeongsammunchwirok>, full-length novels from the late Joseon Dynasty. By uncovering the true nature of the military narratives in the series and comparing them with military narratives in other full-length novels, we aim to enhance the theoretical understanding of the literary analysis of the series, while also taking a fresh look at the characteristic aspects of the history of novels in the late Joseon Dynasty related to military narratives.
The military narratives in the <Myeongjubowolbing> series follow the style of existing Korean classic novels, but they also encompass a variety of materials and confrontation methods through the extensive narrative volume of 15 episodes in total and the mutual differentiation of individual military stories, creating tension and brings out pleasure to military narratives. In addition, keeping in mind the narrative continuity as a series, each group story is arranged to function appropriately. Meanwhile, it sets itself apart from many full-length novels by emphasizing the male protagonist’s temperament as a warrior, while also following general grammar in limiting the female protagonist’s military activities.
The <Myeongjubowolbing> series encompasses the narrative techniques of the military narratives in full-length novels, but shows that they have reached a more advanced and sophisticated stage in their specific use. On the one hand, it is differentiated from existing full-length novels in terms of the depiction of male and female protagonists, but on the other hand, it still maintains a conservative perspective. In the end, through this series of stories, we can confirm the high degree of completeness that compiles the existing achievements of the Korean full-length novels. At the same time, in the history of Korean classic novels where new novel types and creative methodologies are emerging, it is possible to read a mixture of both sides of compliance and rejection.
