초록

한국 근대연극사에서 현철이 1920~30년대에 이룬 성취는 상당했다 . 그런데 한 국근대극의 정립과 배우 양성에 힘을 썼던 현철은 1935년경부터 활동 방향을 급선회하였다 . 그는 ‘삼담(三談)’이라는 새로운 담류(談類)의 공연예술을 개발하고운동의 차원에서 확산시키고자 했다 . 삼담은 현철이 만든 신조어인데 , 연담(演談), 가담(歌談), 산담(散談)이라는 세 가지 공연 형식을 통칭하는 용어였다 . 본고는아직까지 연구되지 않은 현철의 삼담 공연대본을 수집하였다 . 남아있는 연담 , 가담 , 산담 원고들은 모두 독연 혹은 독창을 위한 대본이다 . 본고의 연구목적은 1930 년대 후반 조선의 담류 공연 안에서 삼담의 공연사적 의미를 고찰하고 , 공연대본을통해 삼담의 성취 혹은 실패를 확인하는 데 있다 . 삼담은 1920년대 후반부터 조선의 대중문화계를 장악했던 야담 , 만담과 함께 담류(談類)의 새로운 지류를 만들어보고자 했던 현철의 창작 공연물이다 . 하지만현전 작품들은 소재 면에서 새로움을 담보하지 못했고 , 각각의 공연이 갖는 화술적특이점을 대본에서 발견하기 어렵다 . 특히 극장에서 대중의 호응을 얻어야하는 연행 자체의 오락성과 흥행성을 갖추지 못했던 것으로 보인다 . 결국 삼담은 당시 공연 흥행계에 안착하지 못했다 . 삼담의 등장은 근대적인 양식들과 결합한 식민지 시기 야담 , 만담 공연의 변이 양태를 보여준다는 점에서 신생 대중예술 장르의 생멸과정을 보여준다고 하겠다 . 또 삼담은 민중교화와 공리성이라는 이념적 명분을 끝까지 붙들고 있었던 연극교육자 현철의 지도자 포지션이 보여준 고투의 흔적이기도하다 .

영어초록

In the history of modern Korean drama, Hyeon Cheol made quite an accomplishment from the 1920s through 1930s. Yet he makes a sharp turn around 1935 from endeavoring to establish modern Korean drama and train actors to developing and spreading new story―type (談類) performing arts called the “three―stories” (samdam) as part of cultural movement. Samdam is a term coined by Hyeon Cheol to designate and encompass three types of story performances: yeondam (演談), gadam(歌談), and sandam(散談), Collected and presented in this paper are the scripts of Hyeon Cheol’s samdam performance that are have not been studied yet. The scripts of yeondam, gadam, and sandam are all stories designed for solo performance or solo vocal. This paper aims to explore the meaning of samdam performance within the context of 1930’s story―type performances during the late Joseon period and identify its artistic accomplishment by reviewing the scripts. Producing samdam performance was a groundbreaking attempt by Hyeon Cheol to add a new trend of story―type performance to the existing types of story performances, namely, the historical romance (yadam) and comic monologue (mandam), which have already been dominating the popular culture scene of Korea since the late 1920s. However, individual pieces did not seem to present anything new and fresh in terms of their subject matter, and each performance did not seem to demonstrate any unique quality in the style of speech. In particular, they seemed to lack the entertainment and commercial qualities as performing arts that are expected to win the audience response. In the end, samdam failed to settle into the world of performing arts with commercial success. However, what samdam successfully demonstrated is the self―motivation and vital strength of a popular art form, which showed the mode of which a story performance makes a transformation through the fusion with the modern culture forms. It is also an evidence of Hyeon Cheol’s struggle as the one maintaining the position of a leader and educator of drama education, who held onto the ideological cause of pursuing the utilitarianism and edification of the public. Despite his struggles and effort, samdam disappeared into the mists within the history of performing arts, while revealing the limitation of an intellectual on stage who failed to embody the logics of commercial success within the changed cultural geography after the 1930s.
