초록

이 글은 서정인의 『달궁』 연작에 나타난 형식적 실험과 그로부터 확인할 수 있는 세계 대응 방식을 분석하고자 하였다. 서정인은 한국 전후의 근대성과 관련하여 기간 동안 창작 작업을 해 온 작가 중 한 사람이다. 『달궁』은 전통과 근대로 이행하는 과도기의 문제에 집중하여 사회 구조적으로 발생하는 모순을 형식적 실험으로 표출하고 있음을 알 수 있는 작품이다. 이에 서사 형식과 인물들의 담화 형식이 명확히 구분 짓기 어렵다는 데서 작가의 전략적 의도를 파악해야 한다.
텍스트의 구조는 모자이크의 형태로 전개되어 전통적 서사 문법을 파괴하는 형식으로 나타난다. 다양한 에피소드의 연쇄들은 한국 근현대사의 단면을 보여주고있다. 인물들의 담화 역시 형식적으로 구분되지 않은 채 서술되면서 상대주의적시각을 담지하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 주인공인 인실의 지위와 그녀가 만나는 다양한 사람들의 특징을 살피는 일 역시 『달궁』을 이해하기 위한 필수 조건이다. 인물들은 의도적으로 구분되어 나타나며, 상하 수직적 위계 질서의 관계 속에서 획일화된 근대화의 문제점이 암시되어 나타난다. 이때 다양한 인물들을 관찰하고 대변하는 ‘인실’의 지위는 개인적 차원을 뛰어넘어 다수의 인물들의 목소리를 담지하는차원으로 이동하고 있음을 알 수 있다.
곳곳에 나타나는 철학적, 비의적 담화들은 서사적 흐름의 유기성을 방해하는 돌출적 지표로 기능하고 있음을 알 수 있다. ‘성경’ 내용과 ‘신화의 차용’, ‘시’ 창작을통해 해석의 외연을 확장시키는 형식적 전략으로 나타난다. 인물들의 연속적인 담화 형식, 연쇄작용으로 나타나는 사건 발생과 그로 인해 중심 인물이 반복적으로정착과 이동을 행하는 과정은 개인의 자유로운 의사표현이 불가능한 사회를 환기하며 억압된 한국 근현대사의 분위기를 폭로하는 효과로 이어지고 있다.

영어초록

This essay was intended to analyze the formal experiment in Seo Jung-in’s series of Dall-Gung and the corresponding method to the world that could identified from that. In relation to Korea's modernity in postwar, Seo Jung-in is one of the authors who have been working on creative work for a long time. Dall-Gung series is a work that can be seen that the contradictions occurring structurally in society are expressed through formal experimentation, by focusing on the problems of a transition period to tradition and modernity. The author's strategic intentions in Dall-Gung should be understood in that it is difficult to distinguish clearly between the narrative form, and the discourse form of characters.
The structure of the text is developed in the form of mosaics and appears in the form of destroying traditional narrative grammar. It is developed as a series of various episodes and shows a cross-section of Korean modern and contemporary history. It can be seen that it contains a relativist viewpoint from that the discourse between characters is also described without being formally divided. Examining the main character, In-sil's status and the characteristics of the diverse people she meets are also a prerequisite for understanding the Dall-Gung. The characters were appeared intentionally distinguished and it could examine the problems of modernization that have become monolithic in the relationship between vertical order of rank. In this point, it can be seen that the status of ‘In-sil’ which is observing and representing various characters is moving beyond the personal dimension to the dimension that contains many characters' voices.
The philosophical and esoterical discourses appearing in various places are functioning as a protruding index that interferes with the organic concept of the narrative flow. The formal strategy that expands the denotation of interpretation could be examined through the ‘Bible’ and ‘Poetry’. The discourse between the characters which evokes a society where individual free expression is impossible is excluded, and it shows the effect of evoking the atmosphere of suppressed Korean modern history.
