신약 외경에 나타난 마리아 막달레나 (Portrayals of Mary Magdalene in the Apocryphal Scriptures of the New Testament)

초록

마리아 막달레나는 정경과 외경을 불문하고 수많은 그리스도교 문학에 주요 인물로 등장한다. 그러나 그리스도교 전통이 마리아 막달레나를 바라보는 시선이 한결같지는 않았다. 신약성경 복음서에서 마리아 막달레나는 주님의 가르침을 듣고 선교 여행에도 동참했던 여자들 가운데 한 명이자 십자가 수난을 지켜보고 주님의 부활 소식을 제일 처음 접한 사람이며(요한 20,11~18; 마르 16,9) 제자들에게 부활 소식을 알린 사람으로 나온다(요한 20,11~18; 마르 16,10). 실제로 네 복음서에서 예수님의 죽음과 무덤 안치와 부활 장면에 매번 등장하는 유일한 사람이 마리아 막달레나다. 마리아 막달레나는 주님을 따라다니며 가르침을 받고 시중들고 그분께서 돌아가시고 묻히시는 마지막 순간까지 함께했다는 의미에서 참제자라 부를 수 있을 것이다. 하지만 복음서에서는 마리아의 제자로서의 측면과 활동은 남자 제자들에 가려 전혀 부각되지 않는다.
반면에 신약 외경에서 마리아 막달레나는 탁월한 위치를 점한다. 특히 토마 복음, 필립보 복음, 마리아 복음, 구세주와의 대화, 피스티스 소피아에서 마리아는 영적 지혜가 충만하며 실의에 빠진 제자들을 격려하며 주님의 비밀 가르침을 전수하는 교사이자 인도자로 나온다. 심지어 주님의 동지이자 동반자라 불리기도 한다. 마리아 막달레나는 베드로와 같은 남자 제자들의 공격 대상이 되기도 한다(토마 복음; 마리아 복음; 피스티스 소피아). 여자인 마리아 막달레나에게 가르치고 지도할 자격이 있느냐는 것이다. 그럴 때마다 본문들은 주님의 입으로 혹은 다른 제자의 입을 빌려 마리아의 입장을 변호한다. 마리아 막달레나는 주님의 비밀 가르침을 받아들이고 다른 이들에게 전수하기에 전혀 손색이 없다는 것이다. 이 본문들은, 초대교회 시대에 여자라는 이유만으로 교회에서 가르치고 인도할 자격을 제한하지 않아야 한다고 믿었던 사람들이 있었음을 보여 준다.

영어초록

Mary Magdalene has been a major character in Christian texts and traditions from the beginning of the Church history. Mentioned in a handful of instances in the New Testament Gospels, Mary Magdalene plays a prominent role in many NT apocryphal texts. However, these ancient texts portray her in drastically different manners.
In the New Testament Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John, Mary Magdalene is said to be one of the women who followed Jesus from Galilee and served him. More significantly, she is portrayed as an important figure at the passion of the Christ; she is a direct witness to the crucifixion, burial and the empty tomb. In fact, Mary is the only person present at all of the major Passion scenes. Moreover, Mary Magdalene receives a vision of Jesus post- resurrection, after which she reveals the resurrection to the Apostles. Although she plays key roles in the events of the passion and resurrection of the Christ, her image is often diminished in one way or another by each respective text’s author(s). However, she could rightly be called a true disciple of Jesus in the sense that she learned from him, served him, was loyal to follow him even to the end of his life and to his grave. Unfortunately, her role as a disciple of Jesus is overshadowed by that of the male disciples in the four Gospels.
Alternatively, many extra-canonical texts have Mary Magdalene filling significantly greater roles. Specifically, the Gospels of Thomas, Philip, and Mary, the Dialogue of the Savior, and Pistis Sophia expand her character into an prominent pupil, teacher, and a leading disciple. She is even said to be a companion and partner of the Savior. In these texts, Mary shines as an understanding disciple, a caring leader and encouraging teacher. On the other hand, Mary Magdalene is often portrayed as being challenged by male disciples, repeatedly Peter, who question her right to lead and teach(the Gospel of Thomas, and Mary, and Pistis Sophia). Each time, the male opposition is rebuked and shown that she is their equal. This argument is the clear evidence of a struggle within early Christian movements regarding the leadership roles of women. The texts show that in early Christianity there were people who advocated selection of leadership based on spiritual achievement, regardless of gender.
