초록

본 연구는 일제치하 조선의 신극운동 역사상 선구적인 단체로써 ‘동우회순회연극단’의 공연활동상과 신극사적 의미에 대해 고찰하였다. 도쿄조선고학생동우회(이하 동우회)는 재일 조선인 고학생과 노동자들의 구제기관을 표방한 최대 규모의 친목적 노동단체였다. 그리고 극예술협회(이하 극협)는 동우회 산하의 소모임이되 자체적으로 운영될 만큼 독자성을 띤 단체로 파악되었다. 동우회의 수뇌들은 동우회순회연극단(이하 연극단)의 진행부를 맡았으며 공연부는 극협 측이 담당하였다. 이러한 연극단의 공연 프로그램은 음악과 연극 및 강연으로 구성되었고, 연극의 공연목록은 조선인의 식민현실에 대한 자각과 근대적 자아의 각성을 도모하는 것을 목표로 선정되었다. 조선에서 연극단의 ‘실제적 공연기간’은 38일간이었으며, 사교위원들의 활동기간을 포함한 ‘실제적 활동기간’은 47일간이었다. 한편, 무대감독 김우진은 연극의 사회적 효용성을 중시한 ‘공리적 연극관’과 ‘무대감독(연출가) 중심의 해석적 연출관’의 소유자였다. 하지만 그는 연극제작 과정에서 실천적 방법론의 부재로 인해 무대감독의 역할을 제대로 수행하지 못하였다. 결과적으로 연극단의 공연에는 신게키계 배우 도모다 쿄스케(友田恭助)와 무대감독 히지카타 요시(土方與志)를 통해 ‘근대적 신게키’의 연기 및 연출적 경향이 적잖이 그리고 직접적으로 투사되었다고 볼 수 있다. 조선에서 연극단의 순연활동은 ‘지식인들 중심의 문화운동이자 신극운동’으로 특화된 성격을 지녔다. 또한 그 반향은 ‘사회적 차원의 공적 후원’에 버금가는 양상을 드러냈다. 게다가 연극단 공연에 대한 일반대중과 관객의 수용태도는 예술적 오락적 향유의 차원을 넘어서 항일구국의 문화운동에 동참하는 ‘사회정치적 참여행위’와 다를 바 없었다. 노동단체 동우회를 통한 신극운동은 식민지 조선의 특수한 역사적 현실에서 비롯된 것으로, 연극의 사회적 유용성이 극대화된 점과 처음부터 식민현실을 폭로하는 창작극이 공연된 점은 조선의 신극운동이 지닌 특수성이었다.

영어초록

This study is to explore the ‘Dongwoohoesunhoeyeongeukdan’s Activities of the Performance and it’s Meaning in the History of Modern Theatre in the era of the Japanese occupation. Based on the Press and Historical Documents at that Time. The results of the study are as follows. First, Tokyochosun- gohaksaengdongwoohoe in the early 1920s was friendship labor organization claiming to be relief agency for Chosuner working-students and laborers in the imperial Japan. Meanwhile, Geukyesulhyobhoe was not a independent group, but appeared to be a group with identity which can be operated itself, even though it was affiliated small group under Dongwoohoe. Second, Dongwoohoesunhoeyeongeukdan(below Yeongeukdan) had Performance Programm consist of three fields of music, play and lecture. Among them, repertory of play had purpose of awareness of colonized reality of Chosun and enlightment of modern perspective on the self. Third, Yeongeukdan had approximately 38days of 'actual performance period' with such performance programm and 47days of actual activity period considering activity period of advance group of social members. Fourth, stage manager Woojin Kim was person with both of 'utilitarian theatre perspective' emphasizing social utility of play and 'stage-manager(director)-oriented interpretive direction perspective'. However, he could not work well as stage manager due to lacking knowledge in practical approaches in process of theatrical production. Eventually, performance of Yeongeukdan was in not a little and directly projected Shingeki type of tendency both in acting and production, by Tomoda Kyosuke and Hijikata Yoshi, who are a actor and a stage manager of Shingeki system. Fifth, the performance on tour of Yeongeukdan in Chosun was supposed to be the intellectual-oriented culture movement and specialized in Shingeuk movement, and the sensation revealed a similar aspect to 'public sponsor in social dimension'. Especially, acceptance attitude of the general public and audience at the performance on tour of Yeongeukdan was more than just artistic and entertaining enjoyment. It was cultural movement not different from a kind of socially and politically participating act. The influence of the tour socially has meaning of practical contribution to anti-Japan and nation salvation by people's enlightenment. Also in theatrical history, has meaning of opening an era of interaction between theatre and intelligence in Korea, along with providing the beginning of diatrophism replacing main class of theatrical culture with the intellectual class.
