일본통치시기 타이완문화협회의 계몽영화운동 연구(1926-1933) - 문협 활동사진부와 메이타이단의 순회영사회를 중심으로 (A Study on the Enlightenment Film Movement of the Taiwan Cultural Association Under Japanese Occupation: Focusing on the Mobile Film Screening Lectures by Tsai Pei-huo’s Mobile Film Troupe and Meitait)

초록

이 연구에서는 1920-1930년대 타이완문화협회 활동사진부와 그 후신인 메이타이단의 창립 과정을 소개하고, 이들이 어떻게 영화를 사회계몽의 도구로 활용했는지 논의하고자 한다. 청일전쟁의 결과 일본에 할양된 타이완은 총독부의 ‘리번사업’(理蕃事業) 정책에 의해 급속한 식민화 과정을 경험한다. 타이완 총독부는 다카마스 도요지로와 타이완애국부인회에 독점적 지위를 부여하여 영화를 계몽적 식민주의의 수단으로 사용한다.
1920년에 이르러 진보적 지식인들이 일본 제국의회에 타이완 민중의 자치권을 요구하는 의회청원운동을 시도했지만 좌절되고 만다. 이 실패를 계기로 1921년에 문협이 창립되고 대만의 본토의식을 일깨우는 민중계몽운동이 조직적으로 전개된다. 문협의 전무이사 차이패이후어는 타이완의 지정학적 특수성과 이에 따른 민족적-언어적 다양성, 그리고 높은 문맹률로 인해 사회계몽운동에 많은 어려움이 있음을 발견하고, 이를 타개하기 위한 방안으로 영화를 활용하게 된다. 이렇게 탄생하게 된 문협 활동사진부는 전국적인 순회영사회를 통해 민중들에게 남녀평등사상, 과학문명과 근대적 교육의 중요성 등을 알리는 역할을 했다. 문협 활동사진부가 전국적인 지지를 얻게 됨에 따라 조직이 강화되고 활동 범위 역시 확대되었으나, 1926년 문협 내부에 이념적 갈등이 격화되면서 지도부가 분열하게 되었고, 결국 문협 활동사진부는 문협에서 이탈하여 메이타이단으로 발전적 해체를 단행한다. 짧은 활동 기간에도 불구하고 문협 활동사진부와 메이타이단이 타이완 근대 문화사에 남긴 의의는 심대하다. 이 연구에서는 회고록과 신문･잡지 등의 아카이브 기록을 통해 순회영사대의 활동 양상을 소개할 것이며 당대에 미친 문화적 영향도 함께 소개할 것이다.

영어초록

This study rediscovers and reevaluates the significance of the Motion Picture Troupe of Taiwanese Cultural Association and Meitaituan(Beautiful Taiwan Troupe), a Taiwanese enlightenment organization under Japanese rule, and discusses how the troupe used movies as a tool for the social enlightenment movement. Taiwan, which was ceded to the Empire of Japan as a result of the Sino-Japanese War, experienced a rapid colonization process due to the Governor General’s policy of subjugation of native Taiwanese. Sponsored by the colonial government, Takamatsu Toyojiro and Taiwan Patriotic Women’s Association used film as a tool to justify the legitimacy of Japanese colonial rule.
By the 1920s, Taiwanese progressive intellectuals had attempted to petition to the Japanese Imperial Assembly for the political autonomy of the Taiwanese people, but they were eventually refused. With this setback, in 1921, Taiwan Cultural Association was founded under the banner of self-discipline and self-reliance, and an enlightenment movement to arouse Taiwanese national awareness on a national scale. Tsai Pei-huo, a core member of the Taiwan Cultural Association, well understood that Taiwan’s geopolitical specificity, ethnic-linguistic diversity, and high illiteracy rate cause many limitations in the enlightenment movement, and founded the Motion Picture Troupe under Taiwan Cultural Association, and actively used films for mobile film screening lectures. The troupe, which was born in this way in 1926, served to inform the Taiwanese people of the importance of gender equality, scientific thinking, and modern education through a nationwide tour film screening lecture, and also contributed to fostering Taiwanese national consciousness.
As the mobile film screening lectures gained nationwide support, the scope of activities of the mobile film troupe expanded, but as the ideological conflicts between the left and right parties within the Taiwan Cultural Association intensified, the leadership was divided, and the troupe was reorganized as a independent group, Meitaituan. Despite the short period of the troupe’s activity, Meitaituan left significant legacies in Taiwanese cultural history. In this study, the history of Tsai Pei-huo’s troupes and influences will be introduced and analyzed in detail through hither-to neglected archival records in newspapers and magazines.
