초록

육근과 육경의 조건으로 생겨난 욕탐에게로 결박된 가운데로부터 생긴 알음알이에 대한 안목(眼)으로부터 쾌락과 고통의 두 극단을 다가가지 않는 중도(majjhimā paṭipadā)에 대한 이해를 갖추시고서 세존께서는 오온과 법[法]에 대한 지혜와 적정을 이루시었고, 최상의 지혜와 바른 깨달음과 열반을 성취하셨다고 본다. 선행 연구에서는 majjhena가 Kaccānagottasutta[가전연경]에서의 중(中)의 의미를 갖는다는 이유 때문에 majjhena를 중도처럼 의미하며 사용되고 있다. majjha에 대한 이해로부터의 앎은 majjhimā가 ‘두 변 가운데에서’의 뜻인 반면에 majjhena는 majjha의 도구격이므로 ‘가운데에 의해서‘의 뜻이다. 두 변의 결박된 가운데에서 태어나는 알음알이와 오온과 법에 대한 지혜를 majjhimā에 대한 안목으로부터 갖추게 되었다. majjhena에 대한 안목으로부터, 12가지 종류의 개별적인 연기법에서의 각지(覺支)를 ‘중에 의해서’의 도구격으로부터 이루었다. majjhā의 이해를 Ānāpānassati에서 구현하였다.
숨 쉬는 몸[身]과 숨의 닿음 촉(觸)의 두 변의 결박된 가운데 majjhā로부터의 알음알이를 사대물질 요소로서 알아차림[正念]하며 고요함의 삼매[正定]을 이루었다. 이상의 majjha의 구현으로부터의 고찰은 다음과 같다.
1. 육근과 육경의 조건으로 생겨난 욕탐에게로 결박된 majjhā로부터 알음알이로서 드러난 사대물질 요소들의 분명한 알아차림[正念]을 구현하였다.
2. majjhā의 닦음으로부터 바른 삼매에서의 감각적 욕망과 해로운 법들의 떨쳐버림, 거친 사유 및 미세한 사유, 떨쳐버림에서 생긴 희열과 행복 등의 선지(禪支)에서의 적정[正定]을 구현하였다.
3. Dhammadāyādasutta에서의 탐냄과 성냄 등 다양한 종류의 극단을 여의는 목적으로써의 중도를 majjhā의 이해로부터 기술하였다.
4. majjhena의 도구격의 안목으로부터, 12연기법은 12가지 종류의 결박으로부터 개별적으로 연기하게 되는 법이고 이들 각지(覺支)들의 나열이다.
5. Ānāpānassati에서의 majjhā로부터의 알음알이로서 사대물질 요소의 딱딱함을 느끼고 지각하거나 의도하는 등 감각적 접촉의 작의로부터의 고통스런 법을 꿰뚫어 관찰하면서 고성제의 오음성고[五陰聖苦]를 고찰한다.

영어초록

We have concerned about the understanding of nikāya ‘majjha’ and the realization of the majjha in the training methods of early Buddhism to accomplish the majjhimā paṭipadā. In this paper, we will show that the understanding of majjha has been accomplished by focusing on operation of the mind that is bended while performing a saṃyojana occurred between two sides. We introduce the discerning eye of the majjhā as a knowledge derived from the existence of viññāṇa represented as a dhātu. Dhātu is a basic material element of which the usual set comprises the four paṭhavī, āpo, tejo, and vāyo (earth, water, fire, and wind). The majjhā is derived by the saṃyojana appeared between six sense gates and forms while binding each other. The knowledge accomplished by the majjhimā discernment is that the operation of the mind is obtained from khandhas represented as nāma-rūpa, that is rūpa (physical phenomenon), vedanā (feeling), saññā (perception), saṅkhāra (mental fashioning), and viññāṇa (consciousness). A knowledge of laws is derived as the existing state of things yielded from the majjhimā discernment. In breathing meditation, while doing the saṃyojana between a body and a sense, we can see that sati of the majjhimā discernment yields viññāṇa which produces the khandha. With heeding the viññāṇa during the breathing meditation, we see that jhāna, a tranquil mind, can be accomplished while realizing understanding of the majjhima discernment in those saṃyojana. By the majjha understanding about an implement functions represented by kinds of twelve laws, we can know the current law is occurring from the majjhena discernment by mind and will be intervened toward a law ago. By the majjhena discernment, we can see the majjha understanding to be dependent arising of the twelve pariyāya such as pratītyasamutpāda. We expect that the understanding of the majjha will be useful for a discipline to develop majjhima patipada in the training methods of early Buddhism.
