다문화 소설에 나타난 이중적 환대와 교육의 문제 (A Study On the Ambivalent Hospitality Seen in the Emigrant Stories & Multi-Cultural Novel Education)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 다문화 소설에 나타난 이주민 타자에 대한 환대 문제를 재고하고, 이를 토대로 현재의 다문화 소설의 교육 방향을 검토하는 것이다. 2000년대 이후 한국은 본격적인 다문화 사회에 진입하였으며, 이에 따라 외국인 이주민을 형상화한 다문화 소설이 다양하게 나타나고 있다. 이러한 다문화 소설은 낯선 이주민에 대한 배려와 수용을 기본 전제로 타자에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓혀 준다. 그러나 이주민을 형상화하는 방식과 그 포용 양상을 분석해 보았을 때 타자에 대한 환대는 일정한 한계를 지니고 있다. 여러 소설에서는 이주민들을 연약하거나 순수한 자연적 이미지로 비유하며 연민과 시혜의 시각을 고착화하고 있다. 또한 내국인 인물들이 낯선 이주민을 수용하는 방식에서 혈연성이나 친연성이 강조되고 있거나 경제적, 정신적인 타자라는 동질감을 전제로 하고 있다. 즉 다문화 소설에 나타난 포용은 또 다른 타자화의 한계를 지니고 있는 것이다.
그리고 다문화 교육을 위한 소설 교육에서도 이러한 타자화의 문제가 지적될 수 있다. 제재 구성 및 학습활동이 잘못 설정되었을 때 다양한 문화의 공존과 소수 이주민에 대한 이해를 목적으로 하는 다문화 소설 교육이 이주민을 유표화하고 이들에 대한 편견어린 시선을 재생산할 수 있기 때문이다. 이주민과 이주민 2세에 대한 차이를 강조하거나 반대로 동일화를 강조하는 것이라 아니라 그들도 우리 사회에 공존하는 다양한 개인 중 하나라는 시각에서 접근해야 한다. 그러므로 다문화 소설 교육에서 이주민의 이미지 및 수용의 문제 접근에 좀 더 신중을 기해야 한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to emerge the hospitality matter toward emigrants seen in multi-cultural novels and to review current education direction of multi-cultural novels. Since 2000, Kore fully stepped into the multi-cultural society and there appear various multi-cultural novels describing foreign emigrants. Such multi-cultural novels widen the reader’s understanding scope toward the others on the basic foundation of care and acceptance for foreign emigrants. However at analyzing the ways formalizing the emigrants and the embracement styles, it is found that such multi-cultural novels have certain limits in terms of hospitality toward the others. Several multi-cultural novels compare the emigrants to some fragile, innocent, natural images and fix Korean’s pitiful, benefit-giving vision toward the emigrants. Additionally, such novels emphasize the blood-ties in ways domestic figures accept foreign emigrants or premise the kinship sense of economic, psychological others. That is, the embracement seen in the multi-cultural novels have the limit of becoming the other.
And this matter of becoming the other can be pointed out even in the novel education for multi-cultural education. When the materials composition and the learning activities are wrongly set, the multi-cultural novel education purposing for the co-existence of various cultures and the understanding the minor emigrants will make the foreign emigrants more distinguished and reproduce the biases toward them. The multi-cultural novel education should approach to the foreign emigrants with the viewpoint that they are ones of our various individuals living together in our society, not emphasizing the differences of the emigrants and their children and the efforts to identification with them. Therefore, the multi-cultural novel education should be careful at approaching the emigrant’s image and the matter of our acceptance.
