초록

This paper seeks to find some idiosyncratic characteristics for the understanding of Jesus Christ of Youngmo Ryu(1890-1981) who understands Christianity through his own perspective of East-Asian religious traditions such as Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism. Ryu divides self as two: “jena”(the body-centered, or mind-centered life which strives to worldly things) and “eolna(true self).” He lived a sincere and ascetic life(such as fasting, meditating, and abstaining from sex life) of practicing denial of “jena” through accomplishing “eolna” by the help of God and also by using his cultivational efforts to the extreme. For Ryu, Jesus is essentially the same as a human being, but Jesus is different from the fact that he can be Christ through his perfect accomplishment of his own eolna, by renunciating his jena. Thus, Ryu’s understanding is very different from the doctrines of Jesus Christ as two points: First, Jesus is the same being who has ex istential limitation. Second, Ryu asserts that savior cannot be limited only for Jesus Christ and Christianity because everybody become an ultimate human being by following some profound religious traditions. In conclusion, I asserts that his understanding of Jesus Christ can be summarized the point that Jesus is Christ, but Christ is not Jesus alone. Although Ryu’s understanding of Jesus Christi is one of the good examples for doing Korean indigenous theology, we should keenly aware the point that his understanding of Jesus Christ is not the same as a doctrinal assertion of Christology.
