무위사 극락보전 아미타여래삼존상 연구 (A Study on Amitabha Buddha Triad in Geungnakbojeon, Muwisa Temple)

초록

본 논고는 無爲寺 阿彌陀如來三尊像의 형식, 제작기법의 특징 및 사찰의 중수내력을 구체적으로 고찰하여 제작시기를 재검토하고 그 중요성을 다룬 글이다.
무위사 극락보전에 봉안되어 있는 아미타여래삼존상은 보물 제1312호로 지정되어 있다. 등신대의 크기에 아미타, 관음, 지장보살로 구성된 형식 및 비례, 착의법 등에서 14세기와 조선초기 15세기적 특징을 보여주는 대표적인 작품으로 알려져 있다. 또한 보살상들의 반가좌 자세와 관음보살이 받쳐 든 새가 앉아있는 정병 등에서는 이 불상만의 독창성도 잘 반영되어 있다.
무위사 아미타여래삼존상은 2009년에 시행된 정밀조사를 통해 본존불과 협시보살상의 재료가 다르며 1987년 개금 및 보수 과정에서 많은 변형이 있었음이 밝혀졌다. 1932년의 사진을 통해 변형 부분이 확인되면서 2010~2012년에 걸쳐 불상의 원형을 찾는 작업이 이루어졌다. 또한 아미타상은 몸체와 연화좌에 각각 腹藏物을 봉안하는 독특한 구조임이 밝혀졌다. 제작기법은 소조불상인 아미타상은 몸체와 연화좌가 연결된 목심 위에 점토를 붙여 조형하였고 목심 외면을 거칠게 쪼아 흙의부착력을 높였음이 확인되었다. 관음과 지장보살상은 목조로서 여러 조각의 나무를 이어 못으로 고정시켰으며 일부 굴곡진 부분은 흙으로 마무리하여 목조와 소조기법을 혼용하였다. 이와 같이 본존불과 보살상은 주재료가 다르며, 본존불의 목심은 느릅나무, 보살상들은 소나무를 사용하여 나무의 종류도 다르다. 또한 팔각 형태의 대좌는 비슷하여 공통점도 있으나 얼굴의 형태와 이목구비, 옷주름, 연화좌의모양 등 세부 표현에서는 많은 차이점을 보인다. 이러한 차이점은 여러 해석이 가능하지만 사찰의 내력을 참고해 보면 제작시기의 차이를 생각해 볼 수 있다.
무위사 아미타여래삼존상의 제작연대는 1430년, 1476년, 1478년 등으로 세 존상이 동시기에 제작되었다고 추정되어 왔다. 1430년은 봉안처인 극락전이 중건된 시기이며, 1476년은 불상의 뒤에 그려진 아미타삼존벽화가 조성된 시기 그리고 1478년은 장흥 보림사 북탑지에 언급된 연대에 기인한 것이다. 필자는 아미타불은 1430년 극락전 중건 당시 본존으로 만들어졌을 것이며, 이어서 1478년경 보살상이 완성되었을 것으로 추론하였다. 이는 극락전 창건 당시 전각 내 주불로서의 본존불의 기능, 본존과 협시상이 시간적 차이를 두고 만들어진 다른 사례가 있는 점, 15세기 水陸社로서 사찰 역할의 확대, 국가에서 지역민으로 이행되는 후원계층 변화 등에 의거한 것이다.

영어초록

This thesis specifically examines when Amitabha buddha triad in MuwisaTemple was made by studying its forms, the production techniques and therepairing history of the temple, and investigates its importance.
Amitabha buddha triad enshrined in Geungnakbojeon, the hall of Paradise,in Muwisa Temple, is designated as the Treasure No. 1312. This triad is knownas a representative work showing the features of the 14th and the 15th centuryin the early Joson Dynasty from the life-sized statues, statues consisting ofAmitabha, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, theirproportions and the dressing. In addition, it reflects its own creativities wellfrom the postures of Bodhisattvas sitting with their legs half-crossed and akundika with the bird seated on which Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is holding.
Through a thorough examination on Amitabha buddha triad in MuwisaTemple carried out in 2009, it turned out that the materials used for the mainBuddha and Bodhisattvas on the right and left of the main statue weredifferent. There were also many modifications in the process of repainting thestatues with the gold and the maintenance in 1987. As modified parts werefound through the photos taken in 1932, the work finding the original forms ofthe statues was carried out throughout 2010 and 2012. In addition to this, itwas found that the statue of Amitabha was to be a unique structure which thecontents found inside of the statue of Buddha were enshrined in each of itsbody and a lotus pedestal. As the statue of Amitabha was the sculpturedBuddha, its production technique was to add clay on the wooden coreattached from the body to the lotus pedestal, and it was found that the claywas easily adhesive by roughly pecking the exterior of the wooden core. AsAvalokitesvara Bodhisattva and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva were the woodenstatues, several wooden pieces were connected and fixed with the nails, andthe clay was used for some curved parts. This represents that statues weremade by the wood and using the modeling techniques together. As mentioned,not only the main materials of but also the kinds of wood used for the mainBuddha and Bodhisattvas are different. An elm tree and a pine tree were usedfor the main Buddha and Bodhisattvas respectively. Also, the octagonalpedestals of statues show their similarities but there are many differences indetail such as the types of faces, facial features, wrinkles in their dress and theshapes of the lotus pedestals. These differences allow various interpretations.
However, when studying the history of the temple, it would be considerablethat their production time may not be the same.
As the production period of Amitabha buddha triad in Muwisa Temple wasin 1430, 1476 and 1478, it was estimated three statues were made at the sameperiod. The enshrined hall, Geungnakjeon, was built in 1430, the mural of theAmitabha triad behind the Buddha statues was painted in 1476, and the year of1478 came from the period mentioned in the chronicle discovered in the northpagoda in Borimsa Temple, Jangheung. In this thesis, I would infer that thestatue of Amitabha was built as the main Buddha at the time of theconstruction of Geungnakjeon in 1430, and Bodhisattvas were constructed inapproximately 1478. This is based on its function as the main Buddha in theroyal palace at the time of the construction of Geungnakjeon, other casesshowing that the main Buddha and Bodhisattvas on the right and left of themain statue were made in a different time, and the changes of sponsors' classdue to the expansion of the role of the temple as Suryuksa where the ritual forthe spirits dead in the water and the land was held in the 15th century.
