<아메리칸 뷰티>(1999)에 나타난 다매체 재현전략 (A Study on the Multiple-Representation Strategy in American Beauty(1999))

초록

본고는 디지털 기술의 대두로 CGI가 사용되기 시작했지만, 여전히 셀룰로이드 필름 시대였던 20세기 말 일단의 영화적 경향을 셀룰로이드 영화와 디지털영화 사이의 연속적 변화라는 맥락에서 이해하고자 한다. 이러한 논의를 위해서 복수의 재현매체에 의한 이질적 이미지들이 혼합 구성된 다매체 재현방식 영화에 주목한다. 다매체 재현방식을 취한 영화는 복수의 재현매체 이미지를 사용하여 영화 세계를 구성하는데, 그 매체의 재매개 현상이 20세기 후반기 영화가 변화하는 여정을 잘 드러내 준다고 판단하기 때문이다. 이를 위해 1999년에 나온 샘 멘더스 감독의 영화 <아메리칸 뷰티>에서 찾아볼 수 있는 영화매체의 과도기적 변화 여정을 그루신과 볼터의 이론적 논의에 기대어 살펴본다. <아메리칸 뷰티>는 저해상도 화질의 캠코더 이미지를 적극적으로 사용하면서 당대 매체적 변화에 상응하는 새로운 영화적 특정성을 보여주는 영화이다. 저화질 이미지에도 불구하고 <아메리칸 뷰티>의 많은 비디오 이미지들은 관객에게 직접적인 현전감을 부여하고 그 이미지를 스펙터클로 만들면서, 20세기의 시지각 중심의 영화 경험과는 차별화되는 영화 경험을 제공하기도 한다. 본고는 <아메리칸 뷰티>의 이러한 영화적 특성을 다매체 재현방식이라는 현상에 주목하여 분석함으로써, 이 영화를 1990년대 셀룰로이드 영화가 당대 새로운 사회문화적 현실 및 매체환경 변화에 부합하는 방식으로 - 그리고 디지털 시대로의 여정에 부합하는 방식으로 - 스스로를 재목적화하고 개조하고 있는 예시로 이해하고 있다.

영어초록

This article is to explain the remediation in multiple-representation cinema in 1990s that consists of the multimedia images, for example, not only 35mm film but video, animation, computer image etc. Despite of the introduction of CGI-technology and daily using the digital technology in 1990s, the cinema at that time is not the digital cinema yet. This period is the twilight years of celluloid film’s age and on the other hand the dawning of the digital cinema. But several films with multiple-representation style is connected with the cinematic specificity that is well known to the characteristic of the digital technology era, i.e. a work for a new cinematic specificity in the way to the digital cinema. I am going to analyze American Beauty by Samuel Alexander Mendes in 1999, the visual style is unique due to the multiple-representation strategy, namely a mixed composition between 35mm film and camcorder image. The crude video images dominate the film from beginning to end and remind the audience of the medium itself, Therefore this visual style works first hypermediacy. But the immediate transparency occurs with the crude immediacy visual image. Namely, the recipient stands not against a image, but gets into a image and with the object on the screen. The crude immediate images paradoxically create ‘the sense of presence’ to the audience. The recipient feels immersive and these images turn into a spectacle phenomenon. In spite of and with rough shaking image by handheld shot, the logic of transparent immediacy works and a medium seems disappear: ‘the sense of presence’. Furthermore, this cinematic strategy in American Beauty shows a special cinematic tendency that offers a cinematic experience to the recipient, i.e. the sensitive perception with optical tactility. This study try to understand the cinematic development to the digital cinema, not the discontinuity between celluloid and digital cinema “in order to overcome the opposition between “old” and “new” media “.”(Th.
