로마서 5장 16절의 다카이오마의 통상적 해석인 “칭의” 혹은 “무죄선언”이의미론, 문맥 및 수사적 관점에서 잘못된 판단에 근거하고 있음을 밝히고, 신자들의 삶의 변화를 부각시키는 5-8장의 전체 문맥 및 칭의를 부활과 연결하는 논증의 의도에 비추어 이 단어가 (신자들의) “의로운 행위”로 이해되는 것이 옳다는 사실을 논증한다.

영어초록

This burden of the article is to refute the typical translation of the dikaio¯ma in Romans 5:16 as “justification” and to argue, as an alternative to it, for the translation, “righteous deed.” The study begins with a brief summary of the majority view, which is followed then by a detailed critique of the problems it divulges,the ones caused by semantical, contextual, and rhetorical misjudgments:1) the meaning justification is beyond the boundary of the usual semantic range of the word concerned; 2) Paul does not show any intention of drawing up a neatly balanced parallel structure between Adam and Christ; 3) the typical appeal to the rhetorical assimilation also flies in the face of the casual style of the argument. In the next section a couple of alternatives proposed by Kirk (“reparation”) and Jewett (“decree of salvation”) are discussed and duly criticised. This leads to the final and central section where the author proposes the alternative translation of dikaio¯ma,“righteous deed.” This proposal is based on two major considerations: 1) the broader context of the argument in which Paul accentuates the moral transformation accompanying the believer's transition from the rule of sin/death to that of grace; 2)Paul's association of justification with the resurrection of Christ which also functions as the ground of a new life in chapters 5-11. While subjectiveness is not wholly avoidable in interpretation,the extensive attention paid to the contextual flow of Paul's argument certainly renders the proposal worthy of serious scholarly consideration.
