초록

한 시대의 지배적 매체가 새로운 매체로 이행되면 사회 전반에는 새로운 현상과 양식들이 나타난다. 디지털 다매체 환경으로의 급속한 이행은 인쇄 매체를 기반으로 하던 모든 정보 소통 양상을 디지털 매체 기반으로 변화시켰으며, 문자에 견고한 기반을 두고 있던 문학의 패러다임에도 근본적인 변화를 일으키고 있다. 중요한 것은 문학의 디지털화가 단순히 디지털 매체를 통해 문학 텍스트를 읽고 생산하는 변화에서 그치지 않고 디지털의 네트워크 적 특성과 결합하면서 기존 문학의 생산 ·유통· 수용 전반에 균열을 내는 새로운 문학 현상들을 만들어내고 있다는 것이다. 특히 본고는 이러한 유의미한 문학 현상들이 디지털 시대의 새로운 생산자로 등장한 대중들에 의해 자연발생적으로 태동하고 있다는 점에 주목하였다. 개인 미디어와 디지털 리터러시로 무장한 대중들에 의해 그 어느 때 보다 왕성하게 문학텍스트들이 생산·유통되고 있으며, 이러한 대중들의 등장을 문학의 확장으로 이끌어 내는 노력 속에서 디지털 시대의 문학이 추구해야할 가능성 또한 찾아질 것이라고 생각하기 때문이다. 수동적 독자에 머물지 않고 능동적 작독자(Wreader)로 깨어나고 있는 대중들의 문학적 생산물들을 어떻게 문학적으로 수렴해낼 것인가. 이는 필연적으로 디지털 시대에 부합하는 문학의 개념과 위상에 대한 재정립의 문제를 제기하게 된다. 이러한 배경에 근거하여 본 논문은 크게 네 가지 정도의 목적을 전제로 연구를 진행하였다. 먼저 국내에서 디지털 문학의 태동과 흐름이 어떻게 이루어져 왔는지 통시적으로 살펴봄으로써 디지털 문학의 향방과 가능성을 가늠해 보고자 하였다. 디지털 기술이 촉발시킨 새로운 문학 양상은 제도권 밖에서 산발적으로 이루어져 왔고, 그 파편화된 현상들 속에서 일련의 유의미한 흐름과 고찰 지점들을 찾아내는 노력이 선행될 때 향후의 디지털 문학에 대한 발전적 논의가 가능하다고 생각하기 때문이다. 두 번째로 본 논문은 디지털 다매체 환경 속에서 등장하고 있는 새로운 문학의 생산 주체로서 대중들에 주목하였다. 본 논문을 관통하고 있는 핵심은 디지털 매체 환경이 저자와 독자 사이의 위계를 허물고, 제도적·관습적 질서로부터 자유로운 관능적 글쓰기를 가능케 할 것이라는 견해에 기초하고 있다. 개인미디어와 본능적 미디어 리터러시를 도구로 새로운 문학 창작의 주체로 등장하고 있는 대중들, 그들에 의해 ‘읽기’, ‘쓰기’, ‘다시쓰기’가 자유롭게 행해지는 것, 그것이야말로 문학의 진정한 확장에 다름 아니다. 그런 의미에서 디지털 매체 환경은 ‘시민의 객체 의식의 발현’, 문화적 총체화에 대응하는 ‘풀뿌리 문화의 가능성’을 내장하고 있음을 주장하고자 하였다. 세 번째로 본 논문은 디지털 공간에서 나타나고 있는 유의미한 문학적 현상들을 발굴하여 디지털 매체 환경이 발화시키고 있는 문학의 확장 가능성을 실증적으로 제시하고자 하였다. 많은 역기능에 대한 우려에도 불구하고 디지털 매체 환경은 대중들의 문학 접근성을 민주화하고 있으며, ‘관능(sensualité)으로서의 글쓰기’라는 문학의 초심을 소환하고 있다. 독자를 작가로 만드는 것이야말로 문학의 유토피아라고 했던 롤랑바르트(Roland Barthes)의 주장에 근거한다면, 디지털 다매체 환경은 대중들을 작가로 만드는 이상을 실현하기에 그 어느 때보다 이상적인 환경을 제공하고 있는 것이다. 그리고 마지막으로 디지털 리터러시를 기반으로 한 새로운 문학적 실험이 필요함을 주장하고자 하였다. 프로그래밍이라는 수학적 체계에 기반하는 디지털 시대의 문학은 문학과 수학의 융합을 통한 서사의 실험 가능성을 내장하고 있다. 본 논문은 관습적 형식에 대한 저항으로서의 끈질긴 실험 속에서 디지털 문학의 가능성이 추구될 수 있으리라 판단하였으며, 이러한 가능성을 발견하기 위한 문학의 실험정신을 촉구하고자 하였다. 결론적으로, 이 시대의 지배적 미디어가 된 디지털 매체에 의해 문학은 새로운 양식과 위상으로 변모할 것이다. 이미 역사가 증명해 왔듯, 모든 문화적 양상은 영속성과 절대성을 가질 수 없으며 보전과 전복을 변증법적으로 이루어내는 가운데 이어진다. 문학 또한 문학이 축적시켜 온 전통적 가치와 양식들을 보전하고 전복하는 과정을 통해 미래로 나아갈 것이다. 분명한 것은 기술 환경의 변화 속에서 어떤 새로운 매체가 지배적 매체로 등장한다 해도 문학은 그 매체에 맞는 형식과 내용을 통해 변화를 모색하며, 시대를 성찰하고 위로하는 역할을 지속해 나갈 것이라는 점이다. 따라서 이제 적극적으로 디지털 매체를 문학 창작의 도구로 활용하며, 새로운 서사와 형식에 대한 실험을 통해 문학의 새로운 지평을 열어내야 할 것이다.

영어초록

When the dominant medium of an era is transferred to a new medium, a new phenomenon and form appears in society as a whole. The rapid transition to a digital multimedia environment has transformed the appearance of information communication, initially based on print media, into digital media. This is creating a fundamental change to the paradigm of literature, originally based on letters. Important thing is that the digitization of literature is not only about the change of reading and producing literary works through digital media. By combining with the network-like characteristics of digital media, a new literary phenomenon that is quite different from the production, distribution, and acceptance methods of existing literature is emerging. In particular, this paper has focused on how these significant literary phenomena are naturally occurring by the digital age community. More than ever, literary texts are being produced and circulated by the public, educated with digital literacy and having their own personal media. Through the effort to bring the emergence of these masses to the expansion of literature, the direction that the literature of the digital age should pursue will be found. How could the literary products of the masses, who are no more remaining as passive consumers but are becoming active producers, be embraced? This inevitably raises the problems of re-establishing the concept and status of literature in line with the digital age. Based on this background, this paper has largely focused on four objectives. First, it has attempted to gauge the direction and possibility of digital literature by examining its birth and flow in Korea. A new literary appearance triggered by digital technology has been sporadically achieved outside institutions; and I think that it is possible to discuss the future of digital literature once efforts are made to find a series of meaningful flows and points of observation in these fragmented phenomena. Second, this paper focuses on the public as a producer of new literature emerging from a digital multimedia environment. The main theme of this paper is based on the perspective that the digital media environment will break down the hierarchy between the author and the reader, while enabling a voluptuous writing that’s free from institutional and customary order. The public is emerging as the subject of creating new literature equipped with tools of personal media and instinctive media literacy, and through them, “reading”, “writing”, “rewriting” will be done freely, which will be the true expansion of literature. In this sense, this argues that the digital media environment embodies “the manifestation of citizens’ object consciousness” and the “possibility of a grassroots culture” that responds to the totality of culture. Third, this paper attempts to present the possibility of expanding literature, which is being stimulated by the digital media environment, by identifying the meaningful literary phenomena being manifested in the digital space. Despite the concerns about the many dysfunctions, the digital media environment democratizes the accessibility of literature to the public, and calls for the original intentions of literature – “to write as a sensualité”. Based on Roland Barthes’ claim that forming readers into writers is a utopia for literature, the digital multimedia environment realizes this model of making the public as writers, providing a more ideal environment than ever. Finally, I have attempted to argue that a new literary experiment that is based on digital literary is necessary. The literature of the digital age, which is based on the mathematical system of programming, embeds the possibility of a narrative experiment through the fusion of literature and mathematics. This paper considers that the possibilities of digital literature can be pursued through persistent experiments as a resistance to the conventional form, and urges the experimental spirit of literature to discover this possibility. In conclusion, literature will be transformed into a new format and status through the digital media, which has become the dominant media of this era. As the history has already proven, all kinds of cultural aspects can neither be permanent nor absolute but evolve in expansive directions through achieving preservation and subversion in dialectic ways. Literature will also move towards the future through the process of preserving and subverting the traditional values and formats that has been accumulated by literature. What is certain is that even if a new medium dominantly emerges with the changes in a technological environment, literature will seek change through a format and content that suits this new medium, and it will continue its role of introspecting and reconciling the times. Therefore, it is necessary to actively use digital media as a tool for literary creation, and to open new horizons of literature through experiments on new narratives and forms.
