전쟁책임과 점령기 일본문학 : 사타 이네코 「포말의 기록(泡沫の記録)」과 ‘전향’을 중심으로 (War Responsibilities and Japanese Literature during the American Occupation : Focusing on Sata Ineko’s “Homatsu no Kiroku (A record of foam)”)

초록

본 연구에서는 사타 이네코의 소설 「포말의 기록」을 통해 일본 좌익문학자들의 전쟁에 대한 ‘애매한’ 태도와 그 책임의 ‘애매한’ 매듭의 문제를 함께 조명해 보았다. 사소설의 방식으로쓰인 「포말의 기록」은 여러 실존작가들이 이니셜로 등장하는 모델 소설이기도 하며, 그런 의미에서 패전 직후의 전쟁책임 논의와 일본 문단의 기류를 직접적으로 반영하고 있다고 할 수있다. 프롤레타리아문학의 순교자 고바야시 다키지와 전시 중 ‘문단의 어른’으로서 전쟁협력을 주도했던 기쿠치 칸, 이들을 모델로 삼은 두 명의 작가 ‘K’는, 소설 속에서 각각 서로 다른문단 내 위상과 정치적 입장으로 인해 주인공인 작가 ‘도시에’로 하여금 새삼 자신의 애매한위치를 깨닫게 하는 계기로 작용한다. 소설은 그 양 진영 모두에 관련된 도시에가 전쟁책임과전향을 둘러싼 자신의 모호함을 성찰해가는 구도를 취하고 있다.
「포말의 기록」 속에서 일본 문학자들의 좌/우 구도는 ‘전후’를 배경으로 해서는 뚜렷이 양분되어 그려진다. 하지만 전시 중에는 ‘천황의 전쟁’을 긍정하고 도왔다는 점에 있어서 좌익과우익의 구분이 모호했다. 일본공산당의 지도자였던 사노와 나베야마가 전향한 이후 ‘전전’과‘전중’의 좌익문학자들 대다수가 전향의 단계를 거쳐 전쟁에 가담하게 되었기 때문이다. 지도자들의 전향 논리는, ‘천황’에 대한 대중적 심리를 구실로, 그때까지 반대해 왔던 ‘국체’와 ‘전쟁’을 긍정하는 방향으로 나아가는 것이었다. 그것은 “새로운 적극적 원리에 근거하는 프롤레타리아혁명운동의 재편성”(다카바타케 미치토시)이라는 명목을 취하고 있었기 때문에 ‘배반’ 의 죄의식을 약화시키고 많은 전향자를 낳았다. 정치적 목적에 부응하는 문학에 익숙한 그들이 국책에 가담한 것은 어찌 보면 자연스런 일이었고, 바로 그 지점에 전시 중 좌익과 우익의문학은 애매하게 겹쳐질 수 있는 여지를 마련하고 있었다.
그런데 패전 직후 일본의 문단에서 벌어진 전쟁책임 추궁은 바로 이 ‘구프롤레타리아문학자’들이 주도하게 되어, 결과적으로 “전쟁책임이 전향책임으로 뒤바뀌는 결과”(가라타니 고진) 를 초래하게 된다. 전향에 대한 책임은 공산당 재입당으로 상당 부분이 해소될 수 있다고 믿었던 그들은, 전후 좌익문학 단체의 재결성과 일부 비전향 문학자들의 권위를 힘입어 전쟁책임추궁자의 위치에 서게 되었던 것이다. 하지만 전쟁협력의 전력으로 추궁 주체의 자격이 흔들리는 상황에서는 추궁의 ‘잣대’역시 애매해질 수밖에 없었다. 「포말의 기록」이 전쟁책임을 제재로 삼으면서도 전사자들이나 전쟁피해자들을 향한 주인공의 속죄감보다는 ‘당(黨)’에 대한 건한 태도와 헌신의 마음을 강조하고 있는 것은 패전 후 좌익문학자들 사이에서 전쟁책임이 향책임으로 뒤바뀌어 버린 결과라고 할 수 있다. 또한 ‘도시에’가 자신에게 돌아오는 전쟁협력 추궁의 화살에 ‘수긍’과 ‘항변’의 심경을 동시에 지니는 것 역시, 그녀 자신이 속한 좌익문학 단체의 애매한 전쟁책임 추궁의 방식을 말해주는 것이다.

영어초록

This study explored the ‘ambiguous’ attitude on the war taken by the left wing literary persons in Japan and the issue of ‘ambiguous’ conclusion on their war responsibility through the novel “Homatsu no Kiroku”. Two writers belonging to the two opposing literary camps, symbolized by Kobayashi Takiji and Kikuchi Kan, appear in the novel “Homatsu no Kiroku”. The novel has the composition, in which a female writer ‘Toshie’ related to both camps introspect on the ambiguous position of self regarding the war responsibility and conversion. As known, Kobayashi was the person who was respected by ex-proletarian writers including Sata Ineko as a literary martyr. On the other hand, Kikuchi Kan was regarded as one of the representative writers, who were deeply involved in making literature in conformity with state policy and cooperated to the war effort of Japanese government since the 1930s; though Kikuchi Kan also contributed a lot to Japanese literature by finding and supporting new writers. The two writers, who were modeled after Kobayashi and Kikuchi, work as an opportunity for Toshie in learning the ambiguous position of self due to the different positions in the literary circle and the political standings of the two writers in the novel.
After the conversion of Sano and Nabeyama, who were the leaders of Japanese Communist Party, the majority of left wing literary persons ‘before the war’ and ‘after the war’ went through the step of conversion and participated in the war effort. The logic for he conversion held by the leaders at the time was that they would go toward the direction of acknowledging ‘kokutai’ and ‘war’, which they had been opposed to, by taking the popular psychology toward the ‘Japanese emperor’ as an excuse. Because it ook the pretext of “reorganizing the proletarian revolution movement based on a new active principle” (Takabatake Michitoshi), it decreased the guilty sense of ‘betrayal’ and resulted in many converters. Meanwhile, the close questioning on the war responsibility in the Japanese literary circle immediately after the defeat in war was led by the same ‘ex-proletarian writers’. It consequently resulted in ‘changing war responsibility to conversion responsibility” (Karatani Kojin). “Homatsu no Kiroku” took war responsibility as the theme of the novel; while it emphasized the solid attitude toward Japanese Communist Party and the will as a companion; instead of emphasizing the sense of atonement held by the protagonist toward the war dead and war victims.
It is possible to say that it is the result of the fact that the conversion responsibility worked heavier than the war responsibility among the left wing literary persons after the defeat in war.
‘Toshie’ also has the mind attitude of ‘acknowledgement’ and ‘protest’ at the same time against the close questioning on the war responsibility toward her.
It implies that there was ambiguousness in the responsibility questioning method taken by the left wing literature association, to which ‘Toshie’ belonged to.
This study paid attention to the I-novel “Homatsu no Kiroku” as a text, which raises the issue of ‘ambiguousness’ of Japanese literary persons regarding the war responsibility, on which the whole Japanese literary circle should contemplate rather an individual, and contemplated the implication of it.
