사회적 재난 소재 뮤지컬에서의 예외상태와 새로운 공동체의 비전 -<숲속으로>, <여신님이 보고 계셔>, <컴 프롬 어웨이>를 중심으로 (Musicals Based on Social Disasters: An Examination of the State of Exception and Community Vision)

초록

이 논문에서는 사회적 재난을 소재로 한 뮤지컬 <숲속으로>, <여신님이 보고 계셔>, <컴 프롬 어웨이>에 나타난 예외상태와 새로운 공동체의 비전을 분석했다. 이를 위해 각 작품들에서 예외상태를 발생시키는 사건의 의미와 이질적인 공간인 헤테로토피아에서 인물들이 형성하는 공동체의 모습을 아감벤, 랑시에르, 바디우 등 동시대 공동체 이론을 활용하여 분석했다. 그림 형제의 전래동화를 바탕으로 한 <숲속으로>에서는 인물들이 거인의 복수를 불러일으킨 것이 기존 동화 속에서의 반복적인 소망충동임을 깨달은 후 이야기를 전복하며 패러다임의 전환을 보여주고, 6.25 전쟁을 배경으로 하는 <여신님이 보고 계셔>에서는 포로이송선이 무인도에 난파하게 된 이후 남북한 병사들이 여신님이라는 가상의 존재를 중심으로 유희하며 이념을 초월한 ‘미학적 공동체’를 형성한다. 그리고 <컴 프롬 어웨이>에서는 9.11 테러로 인한 국제적인 비상사태와 캐나다 뉴펀들랜드에서의 비상사태가 대조적인 양상을 보이는 가운데, 뉴펀들랜드 섬에 비상착륙한 승객들이 일상의 몫을 벗어나 ‘무위의 공동체’를 이룬다. 이 작품들에서 인물들이 맞닥뜨리는 재난은 기존에 옳다고 여겨진 모든 체계를 무너뜨리며 새로운 주체를 형성하게 만드는 ‘역사적’인 사건으로 읽을 수 있다. 이때 발생하는 예외상태 속에서 인물들은 경계적(liminal)인 시공간으로 들어가게 되며, 이전의 사회적 정체성을 벗어나 자유로운 주체로 재탄생하게 된다. 이들이 형성하는 새로운 공동체는 해체주의적 공동체 이론의 시각과 맥을 같이하는 면이 있다. 20세기 이후 철학자들은 공동체를 단일한 실체로 보는 기존의 관점에 반대하는 경향을 보여 왔는데, 연구 대상인 뮤지컬들이 제시하는 공동체 역시 동일성을 지향하지 않으며, 기존의 권력구조를 대신할 대안을 만들어내는 데 집중하지도 않는다. 변증법적인 과정을 거쳐서 도달할 유토피아를 추구하는 것도 아니다. 이는 기존의 견고한 사회 구조를 깨뜨리려 하지만, 또 다른 시스템을 제시하거나 다시 집단의 일부로서 고정된 정체성을 찾지 않는다는 점에서 ‘도래하는 공동체’의 비전을 보여준다.

영어초록

This paper explores the portrayal of the ‘state of exception’ and communities in the musicals Into the Woods, The Goddess Is Watching, and Come from Away, all of which revolve around human-caused social disasters. It examines the underlying causes of the disasters and the state of exception that arises due to each context, then delves into the formation of communal identities by the characters within heterogeneous spaces. Through this analysis, this paper demonstrates how these works present new communities that challenge and transform existing oppressive societal systems, drawing on contemporary community theories proposed by Giorgio Agamben, Jacques Rancière, and Alain Badiou.
Into the Woods, a Broadway musical based on Grimms' Fairy Tales, depicts the characters undergoing a paradigm shift as they challenge the norms of the original fairy tale within the woods. Along the way, they confront the retaliation of a giant and realize the root cause of that event. This process leads to the emergence of liberated individuals and the establishment of an unoppressed community.
In the Korean musical The Goddess Is Watching, following the sinking of a prisoner of war ship, soldiers from both South and North Korea transcend ideological barriers, resulting in the formation of an ‘aesthetic community’. Centered around a virtual goddess created by the soldiers, this community envisions her presence on an uninhabited island. Their shared experience fosters harmony and mutual understanding.
Lastly, Come From Away contrasts the global state of emergency prompted by the 9/11 terrorist attacks with the localized state of emergency in Gander, a small Canadian town in Newfoundland. The characters face an emergency landing, and head to an ‘inoperative community’ in the town, being detached from their previous lives. This community represents a departure from the established social order.
The disasters encountered by the characters in these works within heterotopia can be seen as ‘historical events’ that subvert preconceived systems and give rise to new subjectivities. The new communities formed by these liberated individuals share perspectives and characteristics that resonate with deconstructivist theories of community. Rather than pursuing a utopia achieved through dialectical processes, they aim to deconstruct established social structures without providing predefined alternatives, resisting fixed identities as individual members within systems. This suggests the emergence of dynamic and evolving ‘the coming community’.
