초록

This dissertation investigates 2 works showing motif of rite of passage among the created juvenile stories which were published in 『Children』and 『Juvenile Story』, the Korean and Japanese literary magazine for children founded at the beginning of 1920s’. The 2 works are 「Mask of Half Night」(1921, 百田宗治: Momota Souji), 「Mother’s present」(1923/1925, Ma Hae Song). The psychological critic methodology is applied to this dissertation, because the overall problems occurring in the human relation related to rite of passage are reflected in these juvenile stories with strong symbolism.
Each juvenile story implies that the age before & after 7~8 years old or 13 years old is significant turning point in the life. Thus, the characters entering this age show regression in the meaning intertwined with growth. As if symbolizing the extreme difficulty in which the protagonists fall into hardship by numerous ordeals while they land on the reality from regression, all of the 2 juvenile stories describe death,despair and the crisis of death. In the case of 「Mask of Half Night」or 「Mother’s present」, the boy in the crisis of death is resurrected and the other boy in ordeal can be deemed to lead new commencement by recovery of relation. The grandfather in 「Grandfather on the snow」can be deemed to lead the world of death to new commencement through internal growth. From the viewpoint of rite of passage, the 3juvenile stories describe ‘resurrection’ ‘recovery’ and ‘restart’ through death symbolized by ‘regression’ as explained above. From the viewpoint of rite of passage as above, the same motif or contemporary conception was found in the juvenile story announced in 『Children』of Korea and 『Juvenile story』of Japan, the literary magazines for children founded at the beginning of 1920s’. This is the response to internal aspect infringed by and dignity destroyed by the trend of war and violent national power as well as the feature of modern times,namely, the WWI, the loss of traditional value and the chaos of sense of value reflected in these juvenile stories. If the universal life of human is continued and the similar shape of background of the age is repeated, however, such mental state depicted in the juvenile stories will not pertain to any specific time, but continue in our present shape.
