초록

This paper investigates a prophetic identity of Jesus in John 7:53-8:11,the so called ‘Pericope de Adulterae.’ Traditionally, this paragraph, which is normally regarded as not being part of the original text of the Gospel of John, has been understood in terms of Jesus’ forgiving work towards sinners.
However, considering the context of this paragraph in the Gospel of John, a more proper identity of Jesus comes to the fore that is, the Greater Prophet.
In order to reach this conclusion, this paper delves into the pericope by following three steps: (1) the textual state of John 7:53-8:11 and its context,(2) Jesus’ identity by focusing upon his prophethood in John 1-7, (3) Jesus’identity by focusing upon his prophethood in John 7:53-8:11. It should be kept in mind that the prophethood cannot be regarded as ‘the’identity of Jesus, but ‘one’significant identity among several within his overarching identity as the Christ of God. Admitting the multiple identities of Jesus in this pericope, a directly linked identity of Jesus is his Sonship in which the forgiveness of sins plays a significant role. The pericope fits into the context of John 1-8 in that the increasing conflict between Jesus and the Pharisees reaches its climax here. Jesus as the eschatological Mosaic Prophet teaches the word, knows the inner motives of men, reveals sins through the law,judges sins, and warns people not to commit any more sins.
