“하나님의 말씀을 너희에게 일러 주고 너희를 인도하던 자들을 생각하며 그들의 행실의 결말을 주의하여 보고 그들의 믿음을 본받으라.”(히 13:7)

본 논문은 송암 김길성박사의 정년퇴임을 기념하여 그의 생애, 공적활동과 신학적 관심사를 개관해 보기 위해서 쓴 것이다. 송암은 현 개혁신학회 회장이자 총신대학교신학대학원의 조직신학교수이다. 송암은 22년 동안 조직신학을 가르치다가 은퇴하게 된다. 대내외적으로 많은 활동을 하고, 많은 논저들을 남김으로 개혁신학의 발전에 이바지한 송암의 기여에 대하여 학문적으로 정리해 보고 개관적으로 살펴보는 것은 의의가 깊다고 할 것이다. 특히 우리의 신학작업은 선배들의 어깨위에 서서 더 멀리 내다보는 것이 되어야 하기에 앞선 선배들의 기여를 확인하고 평가하는 일은 귀한 일이다.
송암은 장로교 목사의 아들로 자라면서 엄격한 청교도적 신앙훈련을 받았고, 총신에서 박형룡박사가 확립해 놓은 ‘한국 청교도 개혁주의 신학’ 내지는 ‘역사적 개혁주의’ 전통을 성실하게 배웠다. 더 깊은 연구를 위하여 미국으로 유학을 간 송암은 처음에는 트리니티 신학교에서 신약신학을 배웠고, 웨스트민스터신학교에서는 성경해석학을 먼저 배우고, 이어서 조직신학 전공으로 박사학위를 취득하였다. 송암은 이러한 과정을 통하여 자신이 속한 ‘청교도 개혁주의 신학’의 근원이 되는 칼빈의 신학, 웨스트민스터 표준문서, 구프린스턴신학, 메이천을 비롯한 웨스트민스터신학 등을 연구함으로 신학적 지평을 넓혔다. 귀국한 후에 송암은 모교에서 22년 동안 조직신학을 가르치면서도 자신이 배우고 익힌 ‘역사적 개혁주의’를 널리 알리고 가르치는 일에 심혈을 기울였다. 특히 몇 권의 저서와 수 많은 논문들을 발표하여 자신이 속한 신학적 전통을 계승하고 발전하는 일에 선도적인 역할을 감당하였다.
우리는 본 논문을 통해 송암의 신학적 관심사의 중심에 박형룡박사를 통해서 전승된 영미의 청교도개혁주의 신학이 근거하고 있음을 분명하게 확인할 수가 있었다. 그는 그러한 기준선 위에서 다양한 주제의 글도 썼고, 조직신학 전 분야를 가르치기도 했다. 지난 22년 동안 송암은 ‘역사적 개혁주의’의 신학적 정체성을 밝히고 전승하는데 기여를 했을 뿐 아니라, 성경신학의 건전한 발전과 동시대의 개혁신학의 발전적 기여를 흡수하여 자신의 신학전통을 더욱더 발전시키는 일에 혼신의 힘을 다하였다. 뿐만 아니라 여러 사람들의 증언을 통하여 확인하였듯이 송암은 ‘역사적 개혁신학’의 수호자일 뿐 아니라 그 신학을 몸으로 살아내려고 힘써 노력한 ‘언행일치’의 신학자였음도 확인할 수가 있었다. 우리가 이러한 선배 신학자들의 삶, 공적활동 그리고 신학적 기여들을 깊이 공부하고 본받는 것은 다음 세대의 개혁신학의 발전을 위해서도 중요한 일이라고 생각된다.

"Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the Word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith."(Heb. 13:7)

In this paper, written to celebrate the retirement of Professor Ezra Klisung Kim, I would like to overview his life, public activities and the theological interests. Professor Kim is the president of The Society of Reformed Theology(= SRT) and a professor of systematic theology at Chongshin University & Theological Seminary. He will be retired from the professorship that he has occupied for 22 years. Professor Kim has contributed to the development of Reformed Theology in Korea, through many activities both internally and externally and publication of many books and academic papers. Therefore, it is significant and helpful to examine and overview his academic contribution to Reformed theology. It is also precious to renew and evaluate the theological contributions of our theological predecessors, because we can look out for more distant, standing on the shoulders of our seniors.
ProfessorKim grew up under rigorous training of faith of his father, a minister of Korean Presbyterian Church. And he had studied and appropriated the 'Korean Puritan Reformed Theology or Historic Reformed Theology' established by the efforts of Professor Hyung-nong Park at the Chongshin Theological Seminary. After graduating from Chongshin, Professor Kim went to the USA for further studies. At first he studied New Testament theology at Trinity Theological Divinity School in Deerfield, Chicago. After earning Th.M. degree, he moved to Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia and initially prosecuted Ph. D. coursework of Biblical Interpretation. But he changed his major to Systematic Theology and finally received his Ph.D. degree. For a long stay in the States, Professor Kim studied Calvin's theology, the Westminster Standards, the Old Princeton theology, the theological tradition of Westminster Theological Seminary including Machen's theology. They became the roots of Professor Kim's 'Puritan Reformed Theology.' The journey of his study abroad broadened Professor Kim's theological horizons widely. Professor Kim returned to Korea and started teaching Reformed theology in his alma mater(Chongshin Theological Seminary). For 22 years, Professor Kim has done his best to introduce and teach 'Historic Reformed Theology' that he learnt and appropriated affluently throughout his life. Besides his career as a professor, professor Kim has played a leading role in succeeding and developing his theological ideas by publication of several books and a number of papers.
This paper makes it clear that the center of Professor Kim's theology concerns the 'Anglo-American Puritan Reformed Theology,' which was transmitted to Korean Church by the efforts of Professor Hyung-nong Park. In accordance with such a standard, he has written on various topics and taught most of areas of systematic theology. For last 22 years, he has worked painstakingly not only to explicate and transmit his theological ideas, but also to develop them further by absorbing the sound results of Biblical Theology into contemporary Reformed Theology. In addition, it is well known by many people's testimonies that Professor Kim was not only a guardian of 'Historic Reformed Theology,' but also a Reformed theologian who tried to match words and deeds in his daily life. In conclusion, it is very important to concentrate and scrutinize personal life, public activities and theological contributions of our senior scholars like Professor Kim because it is a useful way to develop Reformed theology for the next generation.
