문화적 접촉과 탈냉전의 전망: 황석영의 방북기, 자서전, 소설 『손님』을 중심으로 (Contact and Prospect: A Study on Hwang Sok-yong’s Travels to North Korea and His Later Works)

초록

이 글은 황석영의 방북 경험이 그의 후기 문학에 수용되고 변화된 맥락을 탐구한다. 이를 위해 그의 방북기가 생산되고 변모된 양상을 검토한다. 이를 통해 문학과 정치에 대한 그의 세계관이 후기 문학이라는 범주 안에서 일관되게 고정된 것이 아니라 다양하게 변모했다는 점을 증명한다. 방북 이후 시작되는 그의 후기 문학은 세계적인 탈냉전의 분위기와 남북 분단 해소의 관심이 교차되는 시기에 출발해서 지금까지 대략 30년의 시간의 도정 위에 놓여 있다. 이 때문에 1989년 방북 당시 그가 지지했던 민족주의적 관점은 세계시민주의적 관점으로 변모한다. 본 논문은 이 같은 변모의 과정을 그의 방북기 『황석영 북한방문기—사람이 살고 있었네』(1989)와 소설 『손님』(2001), 자서전『수인』(2017)을 중심으로 살펴봤다.
세 편의 텍스트들은 모두 다른 장르의 글쓰기들을 보여주지만 그의 방북 체험이 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있고, 실제로 방북기가 뒤의 두 텍스트들에서 많은 부분 차용된다. 방북 당시 황석영은 국가를 매개로 진행되는 탑다운 방식을 통일을 거부하고 남북한 민중이 중심이 되는 통일의 방식을 지지했다. 그에게 통일은 외세를 배척하고 우리 민족의 동일성을 회복하는 일이었다. 통일에 대한 명확한 방법론에 따라 그의 방북기는 북한에서 민족 동일성을 발견하는 데 집중됐다. 그는 통일을 위해서 냉전적 인식 대신 북한에 대한 올바른 이해가 필요하다고 생각했다. 이를 위해 그는 서양의 관점이 아닌 민족 내부의 관점에서 북한을 바라봤다. 이 같은 내재적 관점을 통해 그가 북한에서 찾아낸 대상은 방북기의 제목에서 드러나듯 ‘사람’이다. 그의 방북기에서 재현된 북한 사람들은 남한 사람들과 다르지 않은 감정과 이성을 지니며 동일한 문화를 공유한다. 하지만 내부적 관점이 찾아낸 보편적 인간의 모습은 북한 사람들에게서 정치의 특성을 탈각시키고, 그들에 대한 이해를 평면적으로 만들어 버린다. 즉, 북한을 편견 없이 객관적으로 이해하기 위해 그가 강조한 내부적 관점은 북한에 대한 온전한 이해를 방해하는 역설을 보여준다.
『손님』과 『수인』은 방북기에서 내부의 관점이라는 고정된 방법론에 따라 억압되었던 작가 자신과 다양한 등장인물들의 내면이 대거 복원되고, 이를 통해 북한에 대한 복합적인 판단이 제시될 수 있게 된다. 다양한 인물들의 내면 서술이 지닌 남다른 특징은 이것이 북한에 대한 민족적 동질감을 환기시키지 않게 하고, 더 나아가 북한의 공식 역사와 다른 의미를 도출하는 데 있다. 더불어 남북 화해가 통일과 즉결되었던 방북기의 시각 역시 이후의 텍스트들에서는 드러나지 않는다. 방북기가 발표된 이후 자서전이 발표되기까지 대략 30년의 시간이 흐를 동안 그는 분단 극복을 위한 문학적 대응을 포기하지 않았으나, 방법론적 변화를 보여준다. 이 과정에서 그는 민족주의의 한계를 인정하고 이를 대체하기 위한 세계시민주의를 주장하게 된다. 2000년 이후가 되면 방북 당시 그가 지지했던 통일이라는 무조건적이고 거대했던 목적론은 수정됐고, 외세를 배격하고 우리끼리 소박하게 살아가자던 낭만적이고도 민족주의적이던 방법론도 해체됐다. 이에 따라 방북기에서 긍정적인 근대화의 모습으로 재현되던 북한의 모습도 자서전과 소설에서는 거부된다.

영어초록

This paper explores the context in which Hwang Sok-yong’s travels to North Korea, which is located at the beginning of the latter part of his literature, is represented and transformed in various texts, including his travelogue. This proves that his perception of literature and politics was not consistently fixed within the category of later literature, but changed in various ways. His later literature started at a time when the global post-Cold War atmosphere and interest in resolving the division of Korea intersected. This period spans roughly three decades, and the nationalist view he supported strongly during his trip to North Korea in 1989 transforms into the cosmopolitan perspective. This article examines this process of transformation through his travelogue, People Were Living There(1989), his novel, The Guest(2001), and his autobiography, The Prisoner: A Memoir(2017) Although the three works represent different genres of writings, they have one thing in common: they deal with Hwang’s experience in North Korea. During his visit to North Korea, Hwang rejected the top-down approach to the reunification carried out by the state, and instead supported the method of the reunification centered on the people in North and South Korea. For him, the reunification of Korea meant rejecting foreign powers, including the United States, and restoring the identity of the nation. Following this clear methodology for the reunification, his travelogue focused on discovering national identity in North Korea. He believed that a correct understanding of North Korea was necessary for the reunification, rather than a Cold War perception. To do this, he represented North Korea from an internal perspective, not a Western perspective. Through this view, what he found in North Korea was “people”, as the title of the travelogue suggests. However, the appearance of human universality found by an internal perspective detracted from the characteristics of politics from North Koreans and made their understanding flat.
However, the inner thoughts of Hwang and various characters that were suppressed in the travelogue are largely restored in The Guest and The Prisoner, and through this, a complex judgement on North Korea can be presented. This change in the way of description does not evoke a sense of national homogeneity toward North Korea, and enables a different interpretation of historical events from North Korea’s official history. Moreover, the central idea of his travelogue, which set the reunification as an unconditional goal, is not revealed in the two subsequent works. Approximately 30 years have passed since his visit to North Korea and the publication of his memoir. During that period, he did not give up his literary response to overcoming the division of Korea, but he changed his method for doing so. In the process, he acknowledges the limitations of nationalism and argues for cosmopolitanism to replace it. The unconditional and grand cause of the reunification that he supported during his visit to North Korea is modified, and the romantic and nationalistic methodology of rejecting foreign powers and living simply among our nation state is also revised. Accordingly, the image of North Korea, which was portrayed as a positive modernization in his travelogue, is rejected in The Guest and The Prisoner.
