‘악귀’로 표출된 텔레비전 판타지 드라마 연구─<아랑사또전>, <오! 나의 귀신님>을 중심으로 (A Study on the Television Fantasy DramaExpressed as 'The Evil Demons'─Focusing on (Arang and the Magistrate), (Oh My Ghostess!))

초록

최근 텔레비전 드라마에서 귀신은 과거와 다르게 표현되고 있다. 주인공 귀신은 ‘기억 찾기’를 수행하면서 친근해졌다. 대신 그를 죽게 한 ‘악귀’와 빙의된 대리인이 위협적으로 부각되었다. 귀신판타지는 인간과 귀신의 관계성을 통해 당대의 현실을 우회적으로 드러내준다. 본고는 악귀로 표출한 욕망과 악귀 퇴치를 통해 제시된 현대 사회의 단면을 분석해 보았다. 해당 작품은 <아랑사또전>, <오 나의 귀신님>이다. 이들 작품 속에서 악귀는 개인의 욕망이 실현되지 못할 때 생성되어 인간에게 해를 가하는 존재였다. 악귀는 자신이 원하는 바를 얻기 위해 타인의 것을 착취하거나, 결핍에 의한 상처를 화풀이와 같은 분노 전가의 방식으로 회피한다. 텔레비전 드라마는 악귀와 대리인을 나누어 시각화했지만, 인간의 욕망을 악귀로 은유한 것이기도 하다. 이는 악귀와 접촉하는 인물들 때문이다. 이들은 상대적 약자였으나 악귀를 통해 힘을 얻고 자기방어를 위해 다른 약자에게 해를 가했다. 이 방식은 공동체의 기본질서와 윤리의식에 균열을 낸다는 점에서 위험하다. 희생이 전제된 착취나 화풀이는 결국 범죄로 이어지기에 합리화될 수 없기 때문이다. 한편 피해자나 주변인에게 직접적인 사죄 없이 악귀만 퇴치하는 방식도 문제적이다. 빙의자는 기억을 삭제하는 방식으로 악귀에게 죄를 돌렸다. 이들은 빙의 직전의 상황을 연민으로 포장하여 희생자에게 충분한 애도가 진행되지 않는 현실을 묵과하도록 했다. 악귀 퇴치의 결말은 불합리한 제도 개선 없이 개인에게 책임을 돌리는 신자유주의적 통제 시스템을 고스란히 반영한다. 악귀가 등장한 판타지 드라마에서 투영된 현대사회의 단면은 사회적 약자에게 벌어지는 범죄의 책임 회피와 문제 해결 지연의 면모를 드러낸다 하겠다.

영어초록

In TV shows of late maiden ghosts are often portrayed as protagonists of romantic storylines. Maiden ghosts have been left in this life because they died unfair deaths, but since their past memories have been forgotten they are not depicted in the scary image of a creature burdened by resentment(e.g. distorted bodies). Yet in spite of that, the reason maiden ghosts search for their lost memories make viewers so tense is because of the evil demons, depicted as black shadows or dark images. An evil demon acts through its representative’s body, committing all sorts of crimes, which the representatives are able to conceal with their great wealth or policeman/professor statuses. Recently such shows where evil demons and their representatives are the source of crime have been appearing consistently. The shows in question are <Arangsaddojeon>(Arang and the Magistrate), <Oh! Naui Gwisinnim>(Oh My Ghostess!). This paper focuses on the evil demons in each show and analyzes the problems they create, their influence on others, and the conclusion to which eradication of the demon leads. The representatives of evil demons choose evil in order to survive, then become subordinated. Thenceforth they kill those who witness their crimes, yet feel no remorse. The evil demon eventually becomes separated from its representative, but it is only the representative who must pay the consequences of sin. Also, when there is a devoted female figure at the representative’s side, there is a possibility for correction. These thematic trends reflect certain symptoms of contemporary Korean society, namely an individual hurting another in order to satisfy his/her desires, then laying the blame on the other person; reducing problems which need improvement at the system level to individual effort; beautifying the acceptance of evil into something sympathetic. Those who are being controlled by the evil demons are proxies of the choices made by human beings. The evil demons and their representatives are distinctive in the show but fundamentally they are one; there is a sense of universality in that anyone can become an evil demon. Ultimately these demons and representatives reflect the state of the current society wherein society’s unnatural problems are not solved by the government but left to the responsibility of individuals.
