초록

This essay explores the impact of Lu Xun’s realism on Liu Cixin’s science fiction story “The Village Schoolteacher” (2001). As an ardent advocate of “technology,” Liu experiments with his “philosophy of the universe” by developing two narrative events: the schoolteacher on earth and the aliens in the galaxy. On the surface, Liu affirms a belief in the progressive power of science and technology as the students save the world by memorizing Newton’s laws of motion. Nevertheless, the schoolteacher’s role remains indispensable: even on his deathbed, he sacrifices himself to transmit his knowledge. Ultimately, Lu Xun’s May Fourth cultural criticism manifests itself in Liu’s depiction of the cultural backwardness of contemporary China.
Liu’s science fiction overcomes the challenges found in Lu Xun’s realist practice.
By planting hopeful clues of sympathizing with the victims of social injustice, Lu Xun risked the criticism that he was destabilizing the integrity of his narrative.
Liu’s strategy, in contrast, enables the fictional creation to secure hope in the galaxy. Liu shapes his narrative according to his philosophy of science fiction; his vision encompasses the idea of an “immoral universe.” Therefore, Liu’s science fiction bridges the two disparate narratives by arranging a coincidental encounter; that is, right after the students bury the schoolteacher, the author includes a passage in which the aliens raise the level of human civilization. In this short story, Liu engages with Lu Xun’s realism; at the same time, his narrative evolves to elaborate his poetics of science fiction.
