Union and communion with Christ (or God) was one of the central themes in the teaching of the Puritans. Particularly the theme of communion was, to the Puritan mind, no less essential than that of union, and this was as true of John Owen as it was of any other Puritan.
This paper focuses on the practical nature of man’s communion with God in Owen’s theology. How do we have communion with the Triune God? What is the characteristic nature of communion in Owen? Owen’s answer is found in the word beholding: we commune with God in Christ by beholding him in all his excellencies, beauty, and glory. Communion is principally a communion of beholding. Owen’s favorite scriptural text for this theme is 2 Corinthians 3:18, which states that we behold the glory of the Lord with unveiled face.
Beholding is first of all an act of faith. It is to contemplate, or meditate on, the object of beholding by faith. It is not an intuitive vision. It is carried out by faith, as a rational function based on the written revelation of God. We behold and believe God in Christ as proposed to us in the gospel. But beholding is not merely an ethical persuasion, nor is it a physical vision. It is a spiritual vision. When we fix our spiritual eyes on God, the Holy Spirit opens our internal eyes so that we can discover and discern the beauty, reality, and power in all spiritual objects, including God.
This genuine communion of beholding has an assimilating power. It transforms the beholding soul more and more into the image of God; this process is what we may call our sanctification. Accordingly, for Owen, the significance for our Christian life of communion with God through beholding cannot be overemphasized.
