초록

칼빈에게 기독교 영성에 해당하는 적합한 단어는 경건이다. 칼빈의 신학과 삶 전체는 경건이라는 말로 요약할 수 있다. 칼빈의 영성으로서 경건 이해에는 두 가지 요소가 있다. 첫 째는 ‘앎’의 요소로서 우리를 위하신 하나님과 그 하나님의 뜻을 지성적으로 아는 것과, 둘째는 ‘삶’의 요소로서 그러한 하나님과 하나님의 뜻을 앎으로 신자의 삶에서 나타나는 그 지식의 역동적 효과가 그것이다. 비록 이 두 요소는 서로 긴밀히 연결되어 있으나 그럼에도 불구하고 칼빈의 경건 이해에 더 우선적 중요성을 갖는 것은 첫 번째 요소인 하나님과 그의 뜻을 아는 지식이며, 이 지식은 두 번째 요소의 기초인 동시에 신자의 생명력 있는 역동적인 삶을 이끌어 가는 것이다. 칼빈의 우리를 위하신 하나님과 그의 뜻을 아는 지식을 살피기 위해서는 칼빈의 신학에 나타나는 논리적 사고의 순서와 구조를 살필 필요가 있다. 기독교강요에서 칼빈의 하나님과 하나님의 뜻을 아는 지식은 이중적으로 나타난 하나님의 뜻을 아는 것과 더불어 그러한 나타난 뜻의 원인인 동시에 결과적으로 성취되는 숨겨진 하나님의 뜻을 아는 삼중적 구조 속에 전개되고 있다. 곧 기독교강요 1권이 창조와 섭리를 통해 모든 사람들에게 차별없이 나타나는 하나님의 뜻을 아는 지식에 관한 것이라면, 2권은 율법과 복음이 증거하는 그리스도를 통해 믿는 자들에게 나타난 하나님의 뜻을 아는 지식에 관한 것이며, 그리고 3권은 앞 선 두 개의 나타난 하나님의 뜻의 원인인 동시에 결과적으로 성취되는 하나님의 뜻으로서 하나님의 나라에 감추어진 예정을 아는 지식에 관한 것이다. 이러한 칼빈의 신학 구조는 이후 발전된 개혁주의 언약신학의 '행위언약', '은혜언약', 그리고 '구속언약'과 상응하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 그러므로 칼빈의 하나님과 그의 뜻을 아는 지식을 바르게 이해하기 위해서 우리는 칼빈의 사고 속에 있는 사고의 논리적 순서와 구별된 시각들, 그리고 영역의 구별들을 잘 살필 필요가 있다. 칼빈의 신학에는 '주변적인(peripheral) 것'에서 '중심적인(central) 것'으로 이동하는 논리적 사고의 순서가 있으며, ‘밑으로부터의 시각’(a posteriori perspective)과 ‘위로부터의 시각’(a priori perspective)이 있다. 또한 서로 구별되지만 그러면서도 상관적으로 통일을 이루고 있는 원뿔형 구조의 세 구별된 영역들이 나타나는데, 그것은 '세상'과 '교회'와 '하나님의 나라'로 불려질 수 있다.

For Calvin, the proper word for Christian spirituality is ‘piety.’ Piety is the very word that can properly summarize Calvin’s entire theology and life. There are two factors in Calvin’s understanding of piety as spirituality. The first factor is ‘knowing’ that is the intellectual knowledge of God for us and of His will. The second factor is ‘living’ that is the dynamic effect of the knowledge appearing in the believer’s life. However, the intellectual knowledge of God and of His will is the main part of piety and it is the foundation of the Christian life which is the effect of the knowledge. The two factors are closely connected, but nonetheless the knowledge of God and His will has greater importance to the dynamic practical Christian life. The former is the bases of the latter and leads to the latter. In order to examine Calvin's knowledge of God for us and His will, we need to look at a certain order and structure of logical thinking that appears in Calvin's theology, specially in his Institutes. In the Institutes, there appears a triple structure of the knowledge of God and His will, that is, the knowledge of God and His will revealed to His creatures into twofold manner together with the knowledge of God and His will hidden in heaven. The knowledge of God for us is revealed in twofold manner: one is the knowledge of God the Creator which is revealed to all humanity indiscriminately through the creation and the providence(Institutes vol. I), the other is the knowledge of God the Redeemer which is revealed to all believers through the Mediator(Christ) in the Scripture(Institutes vol. II). Together with this twofold knowledge of God revealed, there is another knowledge of God which is hidden in the Kingdom of God(Institutes vol. III). In this sense it can be said that the knowledge of God is known over a threefold realms of ‘the World’, ‘the Church’ and ‘the Kingdom of God’. This threefold knowledge of God is to be coincided with the threefold Reformed covenant scheme, that is, the covenant of works, the covenant of grace and the covenant of redemption. In understanding Calvin’s theological thinking, there are some patterns to be considered: certain logical order, two different perspectives, and three distinguished realms. The logical order is from ‘peripheral’ to ‘central’, the two different perspectives are a posteriori perspective and a priori perspective, and the three realms are the ‘World’, the ‘Church’, and the ‘Kingdom of God’ which are distinguished but perichoretically united in a conical structure.
