동학의 ‘천주天主’를 ‘하늘님’으로 표기하자는 주장에 대하여 (Review of the argument to mark the Donghak's "Cheonju(天主, Heavenly Lord)” as “Haneulnim(하늘님)”)

초록

계미(1883)판『용담유사』에는 ‘님’이 22회, ‘하님’과 ‘날님’이 각 1회 씩 등장한다. 김용옥은 그가 주해한『동경대전』에서 하님이 올바른 표기라 며 한울님은 ‘촌스러우니’, 1912년 조선총독부가 제정한 철자법대로 ‘하늘님’ 으로 표기하자고 주장하였다. 그리고 김용옥의 이런 주장을 따르는 사람들도 많이 있다. 유명한 학자의 언어는 사회적인 영향력이 매우 크다. 이런 까닭으 로 본 연구는 김용옥의 주장이 지닌 문제점과 가능성을 검토하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 음운론·형태론·의미론적인 영역을 공시·통시적인 방법으로 적 용하였다.
김용옥은 ‘한울’ 표기를 주도한 인물로 이돈화를 지목하였다. 이돈화는 1922년에야 천도교의 한 간부로 임명되었다. 당시에는 이미 국어학자는 물론 이고, 유명한 문인들이 ‘한울’을 사용하고 있었다. 따라서 이돈화는 ‘한울’ 사 용에 큰 영향을 줄 인물이 아니었다.
주시경은 ‘ᆞ’를 l와 ᅳ의 복합 모음으로 보았다. 한편 김동소에 따르면 ᆞ는 ᅩ·ᅥ·ᅮ·ᅥ의 자질을 모두 갖추고 있었다. 이 이야기는 ᆞ가 각 지 역의 다양한 발음표기에 이용되고 있었다는 뜻이다. ‘하>하늘’이 맞다고 주장한 김용옥은 ᆞ를 ᅡ나 ᅳ로만 생각한 고정관념을 극복하지 못하였다. ‘한울’은 양성모음과 음성모음, 고모음과 저모음, 폐쇄적인 종성과 개방적 인 종성, 실질적인 초성과, 형식적인 초성 등을 조화롭게 갖추었다. 그렇기에 음양상균(陰陽相均)으로 설명되는 동학의 시천주(侍天主) 정신에서 보면 ‘한울’ 을 선택한 언중의 사회적 묵계는 타당하다.
동학은 고유성과 지방 정신, 보편적인 우주정신을 하나로 포용하고자 하였다. ‘한울’은 다양한 방언과 폭넓은 계층에서 공유한 말이다. ‘한+울’로 분석되 는 이 말은 광범위한 의미를 수용하는 개방적인 용어이다. 따라서 ‘한울’을 선 택한 대종교와 천도교단, 기타 언중은 비난이나 칭찬의 대상이 아니다.
김용옥은 주로 이돈화에게만 집착하여 비판한 경향이 있다. 그는 일제강점 기에 문법의 주도권을 두고 벌어진 논쟁 과정을 경시했다. 더군다나 형태 중 심 표기파(주시경의 늣씨 이론을 계승한 조선어학회)와 표음 중심 표기파(조선어학연구 회와 일본제국주의자)의 치열한 경쟁을 살피지 못했다. 그리고 ‘한울님’을 선택한 언중의 주체적 판단을 놓쳐 버렸다.
그러나, 단일어인 보통명사 ‘하늘’이 합성어인 ‘한울’만큼 의미를 폭넓게 창 조할 수 있음이 증명된다면, 언중은 자연스럽게 ‘하늘’을 선택할 가능성도 크 다. 이런 점은 김용옥의 제의가 지니는 의의를 시사한다. 다만 이 제의는 언중 들을 언어적인 위험에 빠지지 않도록 그 사회적인 영향을 충분히 고려하면서 진행되어야 한다.
본 연구자는 김용옥의 논거를 검토하며, 첫째, ‘한울님’에는 동학혁명과 3.1 운동, 6.10만세 등으로 계승된 동학 정신이 함축되어 있으며, 둘째, 우리 민족 의 ‘무궁한 정신’과 ‘인류적인 소망’이 배어 있음을 알게 되었다. 그리고 무엇 보다 과학적인 탐구의 중요성을 깨닫게 되었다.

영어초록

The Gyemi-version(1883) 『Yongdamyusa』 shows total 22 times of ‘님(Hanalnim)’ and one time of each ‘하님(Hanalnim)’ and ‘날님(Hanalnim)’. In 『Donggyeongdaejeon』 annotated by Kim Yong-Ok, he argued that everyone should write as ‘하늘님(Haneulnim)’ following the orthography established by the Japanese Government-General of Korea in 1912 as ‘하님(Hanalnim)’ was the correct marking and ‘한울님(Hanulnim)’ was old fashioned. And there are many people who follow Kim Yong-Ok's argument. The language of a famous scholar has great social influence. Therefore, this study was intended to examine the problems and possibilities of Kim Yong- Ok's argument. For this, this study applied the synchronic/diachronic methods to the phonological, morphological, and semantic areas.
Kim Yong-Ok pointed out Lee Don-Hwa as a person who led the marking of ‘한울(Hanul)’. Lee Don-Hwa was finally appointed as an executive of Cheondogyo in 1922. At that time, all the famous writers including Korean linguists were already using ‘한울(Hanul)’. Thus, Lee Don-Hwa was not a person who had great influences on the use of ‘한울(Hanul)’.
Ju Si-Gyeong viewed ‘ᆞ’ as complex vowels of ‘l·ᅳ’. Meanwhile, according to Kim Dong-So, ‘ᆞ’ was equipped with all the qualifications of ‘ᅩ·ᅥ·ᅮ·ᅥ’. This means ‘ᆞ’ was used as the marking of various pronunciations in each region. Kim Yong-Ok who argued that ‘하(Hanal)>하늘(Haneul)’ was correct could not overcome the stereotype of regarding ‘ᆞ’ only as ‘ᅡ’ or ‘ᅳ’.
‘한울(Hanul)’ is harmoniously equipped with positive vowel and negative vowel, high vowel and low vowel, closed final consonant and open final consonant, and actual initial consonant and formal initial consonant.
Thus, according to the Sicheonju spirit of Donghak explained as yin-yang- mutual harmony, the social tacit agreement between speakers who selected ‘한울(Hanul)’ was appropriate.
Donghak aimed to embrace the uniqueness, local spirit, and universal spirit of the universe into one. ‘한울(Hanul)’ was shared by diverse dialects and wide classes. This word that is analyzed as ‘한+울(Han+Ul)’ is an open term that accepts extensive meanings. Thus, the Daejonggyo and the Cheondogyo, other speakers body that selected ‘한울(Hanul)’ is not the object of criticism or compliment.
Kim Yong-Ok mostly tends to criticize Lee Don-Hwa. He undervalued the process of controversy for taking the initiative of grammar in the Japanese colonial era. Moreover, he did not examine the fierce competition between form-centered marking group(Korean Language Society that succeeded to Ju Si-Gyeong’s theory of Neutsi) and phonetic representation-centered marking group(Joseon Language Research Society and Japanese imperialists). And he also missed the independent judgment by the speakers who selected ‘한울님(Hanulnim)’.
But, If it is proved that the monolingual common noun sky can create as wide a meaning as the compound word ‘한울’, the speakers are likely to naturally choose the ‘하늘’. This suggests the significance of Kim Yong-Ok's proposal. However, this proposal should be carried out with a thorough examination of the social impact to avoid linguistic risk.
By reviewing Kim Yong-Ok’s grounds for his argument, the researcher understood that first, ‘한울님(Hanulnim)’ was implying the spirit of Donghak inherited to Donghak Peasant Revolution, March 1st Independence Movement, and June 10th National Movement, and second, it was containing the ‘eternal spirit’ and ‘wish of humankind’ of our people. And the researcher also realized the importance of scientific inquiry.
