이 글은, 인도철학 연구의 한 주제이자 인도철학에서 제의의 우주론적 용법으로 사용되는 ‘메조코즘’(mesocosm, 중우주)의 개념과 연구사를 간략하게 소개한 뒤, ‘제의의 내부화’를 이룬 우빠니샤드의 철학이 이 개념을 통해 더 잘 파악될 수 있다는 점을 확인하고자 한다. 그러고 나서, 이 개념이 우빠니샤드뿐만 아니라 후대 인도철학의 수행론 전반을 이해하는 데 매우 중요한 역할을 할 수도 있다는 점을 전망하고자 한다.
이 글에서 인도철학의 메조코즘 연구에 관해 정리하거나 주장하는 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인도철학에서 대우주의 매크로코즘과 소우주의 마이크로코즘을 중재하거나 매개하는 중우주로서 메조코즘은 ‘제의적인 것’이다. 둘째, 메조코즘 연구는, ‘메조코즘’이라는 용어를 제의의 우주론적 용법으로 직접 사용한 경우만 한정적으로 수용한다면, 그 역사가 매우 짧고 연구성과도 미약한 편이다. 셋째, 우빠니샤드에 ‘제의적인 것으로서 중우주’에 관한 용어가 등장하지 않지만 중우주와 관련된 상동관계가 쉽게 발견되고 파악되기 때문에, 우빠니샤드는 ‘대우주-중우주-소우주’라는 3항의 상동관계를 가장 잘 보여주는 전형적인 문헌이다. 넷째, 브라흐마나를 비판적으로 계승하는 우빠니샤드가 외부적 제의를 재사용하여 ‘제의의 내부화’를 이룬다면, 바로 이 ‘제의의 내부화’는 메조코즘이 재사용되는 ‘메조코즘의 내부화’라고 이해될 수 있다. 다섯째, 우빠니샤드에서 내부화된 메조코즘은 숨은 중우주로서 ‘숨은 메조코즘’이라고 불릴 수 있으며, 숨은 메조코즘은 소우주에 내장된 방식으로 중우주적인 중재수단이나 매개수단이 된 채 소우주의 심리적 수행을 통해 끊임없이 우빠니샤드에서 재현된다. 여섯째, 우빠니샤드의 숨은 메조코즘(내부화된 제의)과 더불어 메조코즘의 다양성을 주목하고 딴뜨라 시대에 재번성한 내외부적 메조코즘을 고려한다면, 메조코즘을 중심으로 인도철학사를 다시 읽거나 재구성하는 일도 충분히 가능할 것이다.

영어초록

After a brief introduction to the concept and history of ‘mesocosm’ which is a topic of study in Indian philosophy and is used as a cosmological usage of ritual in Indian philosophy, this article aims to show that the Upaniṣadic philosophy, which achieved ‘interiorization of ritual’, can be better understood through this concept. This article will then suggest that this concept may play a crucial role in understanding not only the Upaniṣadic philosophy, but also the theory of practice of later Indian philosophy in general.
In this article, the following points about mesocosm studies in Indian philosophy are summarized and argued. First, mesocosm is ‘ritualistic’ in Indian philosophy as a mediating one between the macrocosm and the microcosm. Second, mesocosm studies, if we accept the term ‘mesocosm’ only in its direct cosmological sense, has a very short history and is under-researched. Third, the Upaniṣads are the best example of the threefold homology of the ‘macrocosm-mesocosm-microcosm’ because although the term related to mesocosm does not appear in the Upaniṣads, homologies involving the mesocosm are easily found and understood. Fourth, if the Upaniṣads inherit the Brāhmaṇas critically and reuse external rituals to achieve an ‘interiorization of ritual’, then this ‘interiorization of ritual’ can be understood as an ‘interiorization of mesocosm’ in which mesocosm is reused. Fifth, the mesocosm interiorized in the Upaniṣads can be called ‘hidden mesocosm’, which is constantly reproduced in the Upaniṣads through the psychological practice of the microcosm as the mesocosmic means of mediation in a way that is embedded in the microcosm. Sixth, if the diversity of mesocosm as well as the hidden mesocosm (interiorized ritual) in the Upaniṣads are specially noticed, and the internal and external mesocosm resurfaced in the Tantric period are considered, it may be possible to reread or reconstruct the history of Indian philosophy around mesocosm.
